  2. Entertainment • A plethora of films, that are still popular today, have generated from the 80's. Such as: • E.T.: The Extraterrestrial (1982) • Sixteen Candles (1984) • The Breakfast Club (1985) • Top Gun (1986) • The Terminator (1984) • Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) and many more! • TV shows like • MTV (1981) • BET (1980) • Cheers (1982) • Late Night with David Letterman (1982) • These were some of the most popular forms of entertainment.

  3. Communication: • Nextel was founded in 1987 by Morgan O'Brien. • Pin drop quality: • Sprint-long distance service begins and famous pin-drop commercials debut. • The most popular form of communication today broke out to the businesses world during the eighties, the cell phone!

  4. Music • Big hair, make-up, and rock and roll. These were the characteristics of many so-called hair bands. Like: • Bon Jovi • Queen • Van Halen • Scorpions • LL Cool J • Vanilla Ice • MC Hammer • And Michael Jackson.

Fashion • Young girls: leggings, fishnet and lace gloves, long layers of beads, messy hair, puffy skirts, bright colors, converse, and spandex. • Older women: big hair, colorful suits, big jewelry, and shoulder pads. • Dancewear: leotards, legwarmers, tights, ripped sweatshirts, and headbands. • Punk style: colorful mohawks, ripped jeans, leather jackets and ripped tee shirts.

  7. Fashion cont. • Young guys: converse, Jordan's, adidas, track suits, chains, and kango hats. • Older guys: suits jackets with a casual tee shirt under, loafers, sports coats, and khakis. • Punk style: colorful Mohawks, ripped jeans, leather jackets and ripped tee shirts.

  8. Family roles • Single parent rate jumped 14% by the 1980's. • More women began working in the office instead of staying home. • Divorce rates went up 18% from 1970’s.

Individual roles • Because of the economic problem more women begin to work. • In 1981 the supreme court ruled that a women could sue employers over comparable worth. this gave women more power in the work place. • Women became just as career oriented as males, and career instead of family became the goal for women of the 80's. • Poverty increased to 33 million people by 1988.

Sports • 1980- Mary Decker becomes the first women to run a mile in under 4 ½ minutes in Philadelphia on Jan. 25. • 1980- Field Hockey becomes a medal sport for women in the Olympics. • 1981- Baseball players went on strike for seven weeks. • 1985- Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb’s all-time hit record • 1986- The women’s Professional Volleyball Association ( WPA) was created • 1986- Bill Buckner makes a game – ending error in the world series • 1988- Kirk Gibson hits a pitch-hit game winning home run in the World Series • Debi Thomas, U.S. champion was the first African-American figure Skater to compete in the Olympics.
