Introduction • This MIGHT bore you a little, BEAR with me. • It’ll take you into some detail of installing, and then into configuring the Windows Server for first use, including • Preparing the machine • Installing the OS (step by step) • Configuring the server using Initial configuration tasks wizard
Before Installing Windows Server 2008 • Know the system requirements • Prepare the machine for the new OS • Requirements vary according to edition of server • Carefully consider the edition of Server you wish to install, based on your needs
Begin Installing Windows • Boot machine with media in the drive • Select language, time and currency format and keyboard layout • Choose between “Full installation” and “server core” • Full installation: GUI, all roles and features • Server Core: minimal version, only command prompt
Installation continued • Agree to terms and conditions (always helps ) • Choose between “Standard Upgrade” (if there is a previously installed Windows server on the machine), and “Custom Installation” (replaces old OS completely) • Configure partitions (useful for dual-boot) • Installation begins!
Initial Configuration • Machine completes installation, reboots, and you provide an administrator password • It logs in and the “Initial Configuration Tasks” window pops up
Initial Configuration • First Section: Provide Computer Information • Set the time zone • Configure networking (or connect to a network) • Provide computer name an domain (create a new domain or join an existing one)
Initial Configuration continued • The next section: Updating the Server • Choose if the server is to automatically update • Choose whether or not error reports are sent • Manually Update the Server
Customize the Server • Section 1: Server Roles • All by default not activated • To install roles, click “Add Roles”, and select the roles needed for the server • Go through the wizards that may pop-up for installing the roles, and close the “Add Roles” window
Customize the Server • Section 2: Add Features • Allows you to add “features” that could make server and network management easier, or just enable “aero theme” to make it pretty • Examples: • Group Policy Management – helps deploy, manage and troubleshoot through the GPMC console • Remote Assistance – helps with troubleshooting and fixing problems in other users’ computers
Enable Remote Desktop • Allows other users on the network to connect to the computer through provision of credentials and the computer’s name/IP address • Gives logged in users access to installed programs • Allows them to navigate the desktop
Windows Firewall • In this section you can: • Configure rules for connections • Filter network traffic • Configure settings and rules for different profiles • Configure bypass rules for specific computers • Create rules that filter connections by user, group and computer in active directory
Now ready to go!! • Once all set up, the server should be ready for use • Thankyou for staying awake!
