Cummins Aftertreatment SystemHow it Works • The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) collects and oxidizes carbon to remove particulate matter (PM) by more than 90% • The SCR system reduces NOx levels by converting it to nitrogen and water • The Decomposition Reactor connects the DPF and SCR catalysts, and includes the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) dosing valve

What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)? • Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is the reactant for the SCR system • Urea is solid at room temperature • DEF is prepared by dissolving solid Urea to create 32.5% solution in purified water • Gives lowest freezing point

DEF Freezing When the truck is shut down: All DEF is purged from the supply lines DEF in the tank is allowed to freeze at temperatures below 12°F (-11°C). When the truck is started with frozen DEF: It is fully operational as the DEF thaws with the help of immersion and supply line heaters. EPA Requires DEF flow within 70 minutes
