WHAT IS THE VALUE OF RESIDENCY PROGRAMS? • Future physicians to practice in community: • Anticipated physician shortage particularly severe in rural and medically underserved areas. • National shortage of 50,000 physicians by 2010 and 100,000 by 2020 • Physicians are more likely to remain in the area where they train. WHY DEVELOP RESIDENCY PROGRAMS? • THERE ARE CURRENTLY 28 OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL SCHOOLS • THERE ARE CURRENTLY OVER 12,000 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL SCHOOLS
IMPORTANT FACTS AND FIGURES • 75% OF ALL AOA APPROVED INTERNSHIPS ARE IN SEVEN STATES • FLORIDA, ILLINOIS, MICHIGAN, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, AND PENNSYLVANIA
