  5. HOW We got started… • Center for Self-Determination Immersion Learning (2004) • Planned action to address lack of real implementation of Self-Determination in Michigan • Developed network to support consumers & families in the pursuit of Self-Determination

  6. WHY • Individuals with disabilities & their families do not have good information on how to go about doing Self-Determination. • Consumers need to lead the movement for building demand for Self-Determination.

  7. WHY • Systems need to partner with others to build a more “person friendly” system of services and supports. • Local advocates, allies and service providers are having difficulties building demand for Self-Determination in their local communities.

  8. WHY • Lack of understanding by consumers and families members regarding the tools of Self-Determination - individualized budget - fiscal intermediary - independent support coordination

  9. WHAT We provide our partners with: • Access to the most current information on Self-Determination at the local, state, and federal levels • Link partners to information to support the implementation of Self-Determination in their life or community

  10. Technical Assistance • Web Site; brochure; listserve • Training • Access to partner’s tools and information on self-determination • Referral service • Leadership opportunities

  11. What Now… MFP is … • identifying barriers to building demand for self-determination • working with the State to implement the Self-Determination Policy & Best Practices for consumers of mental health services.

  12. What Now… MFP is … • bringing in new partners • building relationships with existing Self-Determination efforts • working with Self-Advocacy Network to develop consumer advocacy skills important to Self-Determination.

  13. What Now… MFP is … • Marketing & designing communication strategies to keep people informed • Providing training & technical assistance with partners

  14. JOIN IN • Organize local efforts to build demand for Self-Determination. • Share your personal experiences with others on building a meaningful life. • Help provide technical assistance on Self-Determination to others.

  15. JOIN IN • Participate and support local Self-Advocacy. • Be an advocate in your community for systems change. • Create new opportunities in the community for people with disabilities.
