  1. THE HELP By Kenneth LeBlanc Social Psychology PSYC 360 A 21 February 2012

  2. MOVIE CLIP

  3. Social Issues faced in The Help • Close Relationships • Informational Social Influence • Prejudices and Discriminations • Fear-Arousing Communication • Influence in Social Groups

  4. Close Relationship • Maid Constantine with Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan • Skeeter is unhappy to learn that Constantine , the maid who raised her from a child, apparently quit while Skeeter was away at college. (She can tell there's more to the story, but no one will tell her what really happened.) • Skeeter looked toward Maid Constantine as her second mother.

  5. Close Relationship • Skeeter did not have a secure attachment style with her mother Charlotte, due to her involvement with the Junior League. (an upscale women's club that raises funds for charities) • She did not trust her mother because of the lies over Maid Constantine. • Her mother wanted her to pursue relationships with men but Skeeter only wanted to focus on her writing skills.

  6. Informational Social Influence • Here we have Hilly Holbrook, a local socialite and the leader of the Junior League. Those around admire her and desired to be like her despite the fact that she treats their own maids with racist condescension.

  7. Prejudices and Discriminations

  8. Prejudices and Discriminations • Prejudice has to do with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions held by members of one group about another. • Discrimination refers to behaviors directed against another group. • Hilly and her "Home Help Sanitation Initiative," a proposed bill to provide for separate bathrooms for black help because she believes that 'they' [black people] carry different diseases to 'us' [white people]. Amidst the era of discrimination based on color, Skeeter is one of the few who believe otherwise, and she decides to write a book, The Help, based on the lives of the maids who have spent their entire lives taking care of white children.

  9. Fear-Arousing Communication • The maids are at first reluctant to talk to Skeeter, because they are afraid that they will lose their jobs or worse. • Minny initially declines to participate in Skeeter's book but later agrees to share her stories as well.

  10. Influence in Social Groups • Skeeter enjoys the monthly bridge games with childhood friends Hilly Holbrook and Elizabeth Leefolt. Skeeter runs afoul of Hilly when she jokes about the former’s mission to see that all the white residents of Jackson, Mississippi have separate bathrooms outside of their homes for the black help. • Miss Celia Foote, a woman who’s an outcast in Hilly’s society circle because she ‘s white trash. • With each lie and hidden meetings with her African American confidants, Skeeter is drawn more and more into seeing how unfair the system of segregation is.
