  4. Purpose of the Job Talk • RESEARCH fit • TEACHING skill • DEPTH of understanding • PERSONALITY!

Relative Importance Once at the interview… • job talk ranked second in importance once on-site (Benson & Buskist, 2005; Sheehan et al., 1998) • errors can be fatal -- most common occur during job talk (Sheehan et al., 1998) • quality, organization, dull, poorly timed, lack of knowledge, etc. • talk should be “nailed” (Benson & Buskist, 2005, p. 48).

Prepping the Talk • CLEAR and CLEAN; minimize introductory comments (Campbell et al., 2000) • GET to data or main scholarly contribution within 5 minutes • PRACTICE! • Galen’s “mentor-therapist” model • ask for candid if not brutal feedback • KNOW your talk • anticipate questions • have extra material prepared

  7. Before the actual talk… • Know your audience and their needs • meet those needs! • this includes knowing TIME limits! • Take control (politely!) • check, double-check slides • check, double-check your points • have multiple forms of talk • rely on no one to cover for you!

  8. Practical Rules From APA (2006): • Show confidence • Know your audience and school • Tailor talk to audience • Keep talk “general and short” • Answer questions! Or admit you don’t know but provide answer later.
