  4. 2007 Hungarian Year of Eco Tourism

  5. 2. Project Objectives and Context • Reduce Budapest’s discharge of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) into the Danube River, and consequently into the Black Sea; • Enhance the nutrient trapping capacity of Gemenc and Beda-Karapancsa wetlands situated in the lower Hungarian part of the Danube River; and • Serve as a model for similar nutrient reduction initiatives in Hungary and other Danube basin countries.

  6. 2. Objectives to be Achieved Through: • The development of tertiary treatment (nutrient removal) at the NBWWTP; • The rehabilitation of wetlands in the Gemenc and Beda-Karapancsa areas of the Duna-Drava National Park; and • The establishment of a comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system for water quality and environmental health allowing to measure the reduction of nutrients and contributing to the development of an impact evaluation methodology; • The project will also finance dissemination activities to foster replication in Hungary and other parts of the Danube Basin.

  7. 2. Context  GreenAgenda x Brown Agenda

  8. 3. Implementation Arrangements • Ministry of Environment and Water – Coordination and Component C 2. MOB Component A 3. South-Transdanubian Environmental Protection and Water Management Directorate and the Duna Drava National Park – Component B

  9. 4. Monitoring and Evaluation Framework • How we measure success; • Outputs and outcomes; • Indicators

  10. 4. Monitoring and Evaluation Framework - INDICATORS • Reduction of Nutrient Flow into the Danube of about 4000 tons per year; • Annual reduction of nutrient discharge from the NBWWTP of about 70% N and 60% P; • Average Operational Cost at NBWWTP; • About 10,000 hectares of wetlands rehabilitated in the DDNP; • Annual water flow and quantity of nutrient s retained at the DDNP increased by 40%, ETC.

  11. 5. Short Term Actions and Long Term Vision Getting the project off the ground: A – Completion of the Bidding process for the NBWWTP B – Expert panel, Baseline, Rehabilitation of Sites, etc. C – Auditing, workshops, study tours, dissemination, etc. High quality, strong baseline, M&E, sustainability, generating, organizing and disseminating knowledge, etc.

  12. 6. Summary and Conclusion • Starting a project is always a challenge; • Rely on each other, ask questions, seek help; • Take risks – learn by doing; • Build on success; • Don’t be frustrated with processes they become easier; • WB – facilitate, flexibility, support, available, partner; • It is your project, take charge, own it, push it ahead.
