ESDS International • Part of the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS), funded by ESRC and JISC. • Led by MIMAS at Manchester University in partnership with ESDS management at the UK Data Archive. • Provides the UK academic community with free web-based access to a range of key international macro databanks produced by organisations such as the United Nations, OECD and World Bank. • Helps users to locate and acquire international micro level datasets

  3. International data providers The databanks originate from: • the International Monetary Fund • the OECD • the United Nations • the World Bank • Eurostat • the International Labour Organisation • the UK Office for National Statistics • The International Energy Agency

  5. Building a user community ESDS International has greatly increased usage of the international databanks in the UK. Now used by thousands, with hundreds of new users each month. Before the existence of the service, the data was used by only a handful of institutions. It is now used by virtually all UK universities. The service has significantly increased the awareness of UK social science graduates of international data resources http://www.esds.ac.uk/international

ESDS International provides: • Up to date data – the databanks are updated with the latest releases • Data free at point of use (licence costs paid centrally) • Single web interface to all the databanks – users only have to learn it once • Single portal for wide range of international databanks, links to other resources eg freely available data • Consistent and comprehensive documentation • Training, user support, helpful helpdesk

Recent Developments • New databases acquired and made available: STAN and National Accounts from the OECD • Moved to latest version of Beyond 20/20 • Data licenses renewed until 2012 • (funding extended?) • New course being developed under Researcher Development Initiative on linking survey and aggregate data

About today Purpose of today: • To present research being carried out using international data • To provide an opportunity for data users and providers to meet and share their ideas on issues relating to international data research • To provide a session where users of the databanks can out their questions to the producers • To build new networks in the international data community • ESDS International staff here today: Keith Cole, Celia Russell, Nicole Baerg and Nick Syrotiuk (University of Manchester) Jack Kneeshaw (Data Archive) Slides will be available on web after conference
