History Defined • Take out a sheet of paper • How would you define History? • a continuous, systematic narrative of past events as relating to a particular people, country, period, person, etc., usually written as a chronological account • Why is History important? • Those who don’t learn from history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them.

  3. Individual Perspective • What is perspective? • Individual point of view, how one person sees or remembers something. • I have a car accident that is half my fault half the other drivers fault. • My story differs from the other drivers. • The story that is accepted by the police becomes a part of official written history, even if one of the drivers disagrees.

  4. Earliest Civilizations • According to most text books what was the first civilization? • Hint, Tigris and Euphrates. • Mesopotamia, appx. 5000 years ago • How do you explain the fossils of humans found in Ethiopia, The great rift valley, over 200,000 years old?

History or His Story? • Analyze the following quote: History is written by the winners. • Summarize how each of the following sides would differ. • American Revolutionary War • British Perspective vs. American Perspective • US Slavery System • Black Perspective vs. White Southern Perspective • Iraq/Afghanistan/Current Middle East • American Perspective vs. Arabic Perspective?

Why teach Black History? • Why have Black people not been given credit for significant contributions in the creation of America? • When you think of Black History, what comes to mind? • When building a skyscraper do you credit the tools or the builders and architect? • Thomas Jefferson 1803 accomplishment? • Louisiana Purchase • Napoleon wanted nothing to do with slave labor due to revolts in Haiti • Construction of Washington DC • Creating the early US economythrough farming, allowed for independence to be declared.

  7. Cool Down • Is History always 100% accurate? Explain your response. • Explain why its important to be aware of American History from a African-American perspective.
