  3. Amazon Factfile Name: The Amazon River Continent: South America Countries: The Amazon flows through Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia. Length: 6,400 km (That’s 4000 miles long!) Tributaries: It has over 200 of them! Source: Lago Villafro in the Andes Mountain Range (Peru) Mouth: At Brazil, flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.

  4. Introducing the Amazon The Amazon River is an amazing river. As the second longest river in the world – the Nile being the first – it is very well known. Although it does not break records of being the longest it is definitely the widest. In the dry season it is around 6.8 miles wide, where as in the wet season it is a whopping 24.8 miles (that’s wide!) There are many tropical rainforests surrounding the Amazon, which opens up a whole new world of wildlife...

  5. Amazonian Wildlife The tropical scenery of the Amazon River attracts a wealth of wildlife including piranhas, electric eels, river dolphins, parrots and many more. The piranha (my favourite) is the deadliest freshwater fish. When in a group, they can strip a cow to the bone within minutes. Locals catch them to eat and claim they taste like chicken!

  6. River Usage People who used to live near the Amazon used the river for agriculture and transportation. This has not changed as the river is still used for these things today! There are many indigenous tribes that live near the river. They are known as ‘lost tribes’ as they have no contact with our modern world. These people have never seen computers, TV’s, cars, phones or anything like this that we use in our everyday life.

  7. Pollution Unfortunately, this stunning river is being polluted, mainly by industrial means. The pollution not only affects the river, but also the tribes that live around it. Their homes and villages are being destroyed by factory emissions and other pollutants. Recent industrial conclusion expansion in the Amazon is affecting the plants, wildlife and most importantly, the river itself.

  8. Fascinating Facts • Over 3000 species of fish live in the Amazon River, more are being constantly discovered. • The Amazon carries more water than any other river on Earth! It contains 60 times more water than the Nile and 1/5 of all river water on the planet! • The Amazon lilly pad is so big it could fit a ten year old child on it! To prevent fish from eating it, there are spikes underneath it.

  9. Conclusion Researchers believe that from sediment, the Amazon is at least 11 million years old! Through the ages,it has sustained life for both human and animals, and has continued to do so. It looks spectacular and is definitely the widest, it also contains the most water of all the worlds rivers. How much longer it will flow and sustain life is like most things on Earth- up to us and how we treat our rivers and planet!
