C9S2: Rise of Dictatorial Regimes • The Rise of Dictators • By 1939 only two European states remained democratic – France and Great Britain • Other nations had dictators • Dictatorships are totalitarian states • Used mass propaganda • New technology • Made their people do what the leaders wanted

  4. C9S2: Rise of Dictatorial Regimes • Fascism in Italy • Late 1920’s – Benito Mussolini came to power in Italy • Created fascism from his political group FasciodiCombattimento (League of Combat)

  5. C9S2: Rise of Dictatorial Regimes • Rise of Fascism • 1920 – 1921: Mussolini’s black-shirted fascists used force to stop socialists and strikers • Wealthy landowners and industrialists supported Mussolini • Mussolini and his followers eventually demanded power from King Victor Emmanuel III
