Chapter 13 Summary • Janie leaves Eatonville to go meet Tea Cake in Jacksonville • Tea Cake takes the 200 dollars she has hidden, and spends it all on a huge party • He promises he will get it all back, and goes out and gambles • He returns with 322 dollars, and Janie is skeptical but satisfied nonetheless
Chapter 13 Summary cont. • After winning the money, Janie informs Tea Cake of the $1200 she has in her bank account. • Tea Cake assures her that she will never have to use that money, and that he will always provide for her.
Chapter 14 Summary • At this point, Janie is very happy with Tea Cake and is in love with him, because their life is very comfortable. • When Tea Cake and Janie go hunting together, he teaches her how to shoot, and she ends up becoming a better shot than him.
Ch. 14 Summary cont. • The Everglades get filled with wild energy through bars and music. In town, Tea Cake’s house becomes the center of attention and everyone hangs out there to listen to him play music. • Janie stays as a housewife to cook meals, but when Tea Cake gets lonely, he starts to leave work just to see her. • Janie eventually decides to work in the fields with Tea Cake • She feels that the townspeople from Eatonville are obsessed with class and status, and she feels bad for them.
Annie Tyler’s Story • Annie Tyler was a rich widow, who fell in love with a young man. He convinced her to move to Tampa with him, and then he stole all of her money and left. She returned to Eatonville poor and homeless • Janie fears that Tea Cake may do something similar because she has a decent amount of money saved up
Literary Devices • Parallelism – Janie’s live story is strikingly similar to Annie Tyler’s story. • Foreshadowing – Annie Tyler’s story gives hints of what may happen to Janie. • Symbolism- Janie’s sometimes masculine actions symbolize her rebellion against traditional roles of women during this time period
