  1. “How to read like a writer”&“I Know Why the caged bird cannot read” By Mike Bunn & Francine Prose, respectively AP Lang Grouped Analysis & Notes

  2. Group work • 1. 1 sheet for your table, with MLA (all names) • 2. You will be assigned sections of the “How to Read…” essay: • Table 1: Introduction & 1 • Table 2: 2-3 • Table 3: 4-7 • Table 4: 8 & 9 • DO NOT write on my class copies, instead simply use to produce your notes • You MAY WANT to reference your annotations to help contribute to and guide your group along

  3. objective • To produce a set of NOTES for your assigned section to share with the class. (Please choose 1 student to represent your group and share notes on ELMO.) • Determine a logical and clear organization for the notes • Include ONLY pertinent information • Think like a teacher. What would I focus on? What have I already talked about in bellwork? • Identify the MODE(s) of DISCOURSE in your sections of the text. • Determine why these were used (purpose) • Decide if and how it is effective to use those particular modes

  4. Individual Work “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read” (Day 2) • Using your SOAPST(one) reference guide, compose a thorough analysis of the (A)udience and (T)one. • The entries for each should be no less than a paragraph. • Use citations to support your assertions. • Next, write up a brief critique of Prose’s article. What is your immediate reaction and why?

  5. Group Work • As a group, you will write 2 pieces: a summary of Prose’s essay and brief comparison and contrast piece. • Summary of “I Know Why…” should be a 2-3 sentences and VERY CONCISE. • Comparison and Contrast between “How to Read Like…” and “I Know Why…” should have 2 parts: THE NOTES and PLANNING and a 1-PAGE ESSAY. As a group, determine the best organizational structure. (2 paragraphs, 3 paragraphs, etc…) • The question at hand is can you recognize insights and draw relationships between the two?

  6. Final step: modeling • I will be looking at “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read” with you as a class. • I want to walk through my own annotative process in hopes that you find new strategy and options. • Take note of the questions I ask and the focus driven annotations I make as both reader and writer.
