  2. What Has Arizona Done ? • Research and develop a database • Governor’s Taskforce on Nursing Shortage • Legislation • RWJF Campaign for Caring

  3. Research showed that we need to… • Attract more people to the profession • Expand the pipeline • Improve the workplace environment • Retain more nurses in the profession providing direct patient care

  4. Governor’s Task Force Part I: Analyze the Problem • Brought stakeholders together • Conducted research and analyses Part II: Develop Solutions • Improve work place • Improve education/curriculum • Improve quality

Legislation (SB1260/2002)Caregiver and Resource Expansion Program • Increase capacity at State universities and Community Colleges • Increase the number of students graduating from our programs by 200 each year starting in ’03 - ’04 • Commitment from AZ hospitals to provide: • Funding for clinical rotations • Adjunct faculty for nursing education

  6. Expanding Nursing Programs • Accelerated program for BSN • 14 month program for people with Bachelors to get their BSN • LPN to RN program • Funding of more slots in nursing programs • Evening and weekend classes

  7. RWJF Campaign for Caring: Arizona Hospital and Health Care Association • Increase awareness and attraction of nursing profession • Raise money for scholarships • Workplace innovations

  8. Lessons Learned: Keys to Success • Don’t reinvent the wheel:Learn from other states and from research • Collect state-specific data • Identify leadership: business, academic, political • Bring all stakeholders together • Educate: business, academic, political • Advocate
