TCDL/Digital Libraries • Technical Committee on Digital Libraries • To promote research in the theory and practice of all aspects of Collective Memory, i.e. the fields of Digital Libraries, Digital Museums and Digital Archives of all kinds. • Technical challenges in digital libraries require contributions from many areas: • User interfaces • Classification and indexing • Information retrieval • Content delivery • Presentation • Administration and preservation May 4-5, 2011 TAC Workshop 1

TCDL/Digital Libraries • Conference: Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) • Premier venue for Digital Library research community • Typical attendance: 300 to 400 • TCDL is fully involved with conference and its steering committee • Includes associated doctoral consortium, tutorial program and workshops • Jointly sponsored by TCDL, ACM SIGWEB, ACM SIGIR • Other conferences we cooperate with include: • TPDL (was ECDL) • ICADL • Publication: TCDL Bulletin • Freely available online • Target is three issues per year May 4-5, 2011 TAC Workshop 2

TCDL/Digital Libraries • Reaching the Members • Open community meeting at JCDL • http://www.ieee-tcdl.org/ • Social media, including linkedin group • The digital libraries community is diverse • Multiple academic areas including Computer Science, Information Science, Library Science • International focus: JCDL 2010 was colocated with with ICADL and held in Australia • Research focus moving into practice • TCDL seeks to foster a community that includes all aspects May 4-5, 2011 TAC Workshop 3

TCDL/Digital Libraries • Recent Accomplishments / Highlights • Leadership transition: Chair, JCDL steering committee representative, bulletin editor • Key support volunteers recruited beyond these: Webmaster • Executive committee meetings at JCDL, ECDL • Plans • Continue sponsorship of JCDL and involvement with TPDL and ICADL • TCDL Bulletin • Challenges • Continuing shift of digital library activity from research to practice • Coordination with other sponsors of JCDL and conference’s need to handle both IEEE-CS and ACM procedures. Difficulties caused by differences in procedures • New initiatives unlikely due to lack of budget May 4-5, 2011 TAC Workshop 4
