  1. By Eric Duncan, Tim Friel, Samantha Fusco, Lucas Pfendner and Jasmine Noble Embryology/Microbiology

  2. TABLE OF CONTENTS • Embryology • Microbiology

  3. EMBRYOLOGY • Vocabulary • Stages • Processes

  4. MICROBIOLOGY • Vocabulary • Viruses • Bacteria • Activity

  5. VOCABULARY • Embryology-the branch of biology that studies the formation and early development of a living species. • Embryo-From implantation to 8 weeks • Fetus-After 8 weeks • Fertilization-Egg and sperm come together to form a zygote • Zygote-Fertilized egg • Cleavage-First few mitotic divisions of the zygote • Morula-Solid ball of cells

  6. VOCABULARY (CONTINUED) • Blastula-Fluid filled ball of cells • Implantation-When the blastula attaches to the uterine wall • Gastrulation-When the blastula forms three germ layers called a gastrula • Gastrula-3 germ layers are formed • Endoderm-Innermost layer (digestive track) • Mesoderm-Middle layer (internal organs) • Ectoderm-Outermost layer (skin and nervous system) • Stem Cells-Unspecialized body cells

  7. STAGES • Zygote • Fertilized egg • Morula • Solid ball of cells • Blastula • Fluid-filled ball of cells • Gastrula • 3 germ layers

  8. PROCESSES • Fertilization • Egg and sperm cells meet • Implantation • Morula implants into the uterine wall • Gastrulation • Blastula forms 3 germs layers and becomes gastrula

  9. VOCABULARY • Virus-Non-living particles that need a host cell to survive • Lytic Cycle-Instant virus reproduction • Lysogenic Cycle-Viruses hide in host until signaled to replicate • Vaccine-Dead or weakened virus that improves the immunity to a particular disease

  10. VOCABULARY (CONTINUED) • Bacteria-Unicellular prokaryotic cells • Obligate Aerobe-Requires oxygen • Obligate Anaerobe-Requires complete lack of oxygen • Faculative Anaerobe-Does not need oxygen, but can use it • Binary Fission-Process that allows bacteria to replicate (identically) • Conjugation-When bacterium exchange genetic information • Endospore-Allows bacteria to go dormant when conditions are unfavorable • Antibiotic-Drugs that combat bacteria by interfering with various cellular functions • Antibiotic Resistance-Bacteria’s ability to be resistant to certain antibiotics

  11. VIRUSES • Bacteriophage-Virus that attacks bacteria • Tobacco Mosaic Virus-Virus that attacks tobacco plants • Ebola-Animal virus • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)- Leads to AIDS (retrovirus) • Influenza Virus-RNA containing virus • http://ed.ted.com/lessons/cell-vs-virus-a-battle-for-health-shannon-stiles#watch

  12. BACTERIA • Coccus-Sphere shape • Bacilius-Rod shape • Spirilium-Spiral shape • Diplo-Pair of cells • Strepto-Chain of cells • Staphylo-Bunch of cells
