  2. The Most Distant Planet • Discovered in 1846 • Eighth planet from the sun • Known as the most distant planet until pluto was discovered in 1930. • From 1930-2006, Pluto remained known as the distant planet

  3. Who discovered it? • Discovered in 1846 by German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle • No one knew too much about the planet until the Voyager 2 probe did a flyby in 1989.

  4. What is it made of? • Gas planet. • Atmosphere consisting of Hydrogen, Helium and Methane. • Planets sea blue color is caused from the methane in the atmosphere • Has a rocky core

  5. How big is Neptune? • Diameter is about 30,000 miles • Size is 4 times Earth’s Diameter

  6. How far away is it? • Neptune is 2.8 billion miles from the sun • Took 12 years for the Voyager 2 to reach Neptune. • Receives 1/900 of solar energy that reaches the earth

  7. Stormiest Planet? • Winds blow at 1,240 mph, 3 times as fast as Earth’s hurricanes • Caused by large dark storm known as the “Great Dark Spot” discovered by the Voyager 2. • The storm vanished when the Hubble telescope later searched for it

  8. Neptune's Moons • 13 known moons • Triton is its largest moon • Triton is the most spherical moon, while the other 12 are irregularly shaped.

  9. Rings of Neptune • Rings are not uniform, but are thick dust clumps called arcs. • One of the rings has a twisted structure. • Assumed to have been formed when one of Neptune’s moons was destroyed.
