  2. Operation Blue Star was a military operation launched by the Indian government in 1984, with the aim of removing Sikh militants who had taken control of the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab. The operation was controversial and remains a sensitive topic in India to this day. Background: In the early 1980s, Sikh separatist groups in India had become increasingly active, demanding a separate state of Khalistan in Punjab. In 1983, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the leader of one such group, had taken refuge inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, along with his armed followers. The complex, which is considered the holiest site for Sikhism, became a fortified stronghold for the militants. The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, decided to launch Operation Blue Star to remove the militants from the complex. The operation was planned and executed by the Indian Army, under the command of Lt. General Kuldip Singh Brar. Operation Blue Star: The operation began on June 1, 1984, with the Indian Army surrounding the Golden Temple complex. The militants inside the complex had fortified their positions and were heavily armed. The Army faced strong resistance and the operation turned into a full- blown battle. The fighting continued for several days, with the Army using tanks and artillery to breach the walls of the complex. The militants fought back fiercely, using improvised weapons and booby traps. The fighting resulted in the death of many militants and Army personnel, as well as civilians who were caught in the crossfire. On June 6, the Army finally entered the main temple complex and encountered heavy resistance. In the ensuing battle, the Akal Takht, a building within the complex that is considered the highest seat of Sikh temporal authority, was destroyed. Bhindranwale and many of his followers were killed in the operation.

  3. Aftermath: The operation was heavily criticized, both within India and internationally. Many Sikhs saw it as an attack on their religious identity, and there were widespread protests and violence in the aftermath. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984, in what was seen as a revenge killing for the operation. The aftermath of Operation Blue Star saw a period of unrest and violence in Punjab, with many Sikh separatists continuing to demand a separate state of Khalistan. The Indian government launched a crackdown on Sikh militants, leading to human rights abuses and allegations of extrajudicial killings. Conclusion: Operation Blue Star remains a controversial event in Indian history, with many Sikhs feeling that it was an attack on their religious identity. The operation and its aftermath led to a period of unrest and violence in Punjab, and its legacy continues to shape Indian politics and society.
