  3. 1. Welcoming Arms, v20 • You anticipate the return • You embrace the penitent sinner • You see through eyes of mercy • You overlook fault & see the need • You give-up the urge to punish • You hold your tongue • You seek to be kind than be right

  4. God desires mercy • Sacrifice vs mercy -MAT 9:11-13 • Enough: suffered, sorrowful enough. 2CO 2:5-11 • Forgive and comfort him • Reaffirm your love • So that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow • So that Satan might not outwit us

  5. 2. Quick Restart, v22 • You take him by surprise • You free him from burden & pain • You stop the shame right there • You aim to restore & restart • You give what is not deserved • You treat him as beloved

  8. Cause for rejoicing • ZEP 3:14-20 to dance over you with joy! • To remove the burden and reproach • To give praise and honor!

  9. 4. Defensive Affirmation, v31-32 • You affirm the penitent & confront the resentful. • You assert your responsibility to forgive, love and restore. • You teach others to do the same.
