  1. The Mallow Family *In the world there are 1,500 species and 85 genera. 27 of those genera are in North America. *The slimy qualities of mallow can be used like Aloe vera, for sunburns and internally for sore throats. Kingdom- Plantae Phylum- Anthophyta Class- Dicotyledon Order- Malvales Family- Malvaceae Genus- Theobroma Species- Cacao *It contains natural gums called mucilage, pectin, and asparagin. These give the plant a slimy texture when it is crushed. These gums create The marshmallow effect. *Three members of the family are hibiscus, hollyhock, and cotton. The only member of this family with poisonous properties is cotton. Marshmallow comes from a type of hollyhock. Okra derives from a variety of hibiscus. Also whipped cream comes originally from the ground-up roots and seeds that get covered with water and boiled. then they are beaten to a froth and sugar is added. *A mallow flower has a funnel shape with 5 petals and column of stamens surrounding the pistil. With 3-5 somewhat united sepals, sometimes surrounded by many bracts. Sources: Botany in a Day by Thomas J.
