2. Meet Your Teachers • Lynne Nelson x 2544 (Math) • Chagrin Falls • Frances Jagielski x 2531(LA) -Toledo • Debbie Kitsmiller x2159 (IS) - Columbus

3. Mrs. Nelson I am so excited to be your 7th grade STAR math teacher this year! This is my 9th year at OHVA and 3nd year teaching STAR. I love math and try to instill that love in my students. I live in Geauga County (NE Ohio) with my husband and spoiled yellow lab, Woodstock. We have three grown sons—our oldest is married and works for a company in Indianapolis; our middle son just got married in May and is an Athletic Trainer for Houghton College in New York; our youngest got married in Jan. and is a mechanical engineer for Bridgestone Corporation in Akron. I love spending time with my family, taking walks with my dog, swimming, biking, reading, & traveling.

4. Mrs. Jagielski • I graduated in 2002 from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelors of Science in Education with a focus on Reading, Integrated Language Arts and Integrated Social Studied Grades 4-9. Then, I finished my Master’s Degree in Education and Educational Technology from Lourdes University in May 2006. This is my 7th school year teaching at OHVA. • I have been married to my wonderful husband; Jeremy, since 2002 and we have 3 children- Two boys and a girl. Aidan is 9 and is in 4th grade. Elliott is 6 and in first grade. Delaney is 3 and in preschool. We live in Toledo. We have a Labradoodle named Scarlet, a pet map turtle named Rocky who is our class pet !

5. Mrs. Kitsmiller I am a 1996 graduate of the Ohio State University. (Go Bucks!) This is my 7th year teaching with OHVA! Previously, I taught 5 years in a brick and mortar school here in central Ohio and 2 years at a school on the island of St. Kitts. I have taught many grades from 1st through 8th grade! I live in Baltimore, Ohio (just east of Columbus) with my husband of 17 years, our 4 daughters, and 2 dogs. I enjoy running, swimming, hiking, camping, and attending my kids sporting activities. I am looking forward to a great year!

6. Getting to Know Our STAR 7 Students • Last Friday (8/22), each student received a k-mail with a “Getting to Know Our STAR 7 Students” assignment. • Please follow the directions provided in the body of the k-mail. • These are due Friday, September 5th. We are so excited to get to know each of YOU!!

7. What is STAR? ? • A program to enhance the educational experience through social learning, interaction and engagement. • Synchronous instruction in Math and Reading • A team framework comprised of OHVA teachers, learning coach, and student. SYNCHRONOUS TEACHING ACHIEVES RESULTS

8. STAR Program Teaches math and reading courses in partnership with the Learning Coach and student providing: A solid foundation in mathematical and reading concepts

12. 9-1-1 STAR Support(for OLS help only) “Hello, this is STAR Support. What’s your emergency?” Please Press A for Math help. Please Press B for Reading help. Your “call” will be taken in the order of your raised hand and when a STAR teacher operator becomes available .

13. OLS Daily Plan/Marking Lessons • DO NOT follow OLS Daily Plan for Math and Literature. • STAR Teachers will message in “The STAR 7 Weekly” lessons covered for the following week. • Students will be instructed which lessons/assessments to mark complete and/or finish independently on the OLS.

14. Intermediate Math B • We will be starting our Math Class Connects the week of September 2nd. • You are expected to come to one Math Class Connect per day (Monday – Thursday) • You can choose one time to come: 9 a.m. or 1 p.m. (NOTE: The morning class will be the most attended so if you struggle in math and want more individual help, please come at 1 p.m.) • Study Island Math Review is for students who need help with individual Study Island assignments. A SI lesson will be retaught each week. • 9-1-1 STAR Support is for individual OLS math help from Mrs. Nelson or Mrs. Kitsmiller.

15. Math Assignment First 2 weeks of school: Complete Unit 1 “The Basics” on the OLS (Do the offline learning problems; have your LC grade them & take assessments on own) **Keep a folder or notebook with all practice problems (labeled with Unit and lesson number) **see supply list sent in k-mail

16. Language Arts B • We will focus on Literature B in our Language Arts B Class Connects on Monday through Thursday. These will begin on September 2nd. • Language Skills B should be completed independently, with help from Mrs. Jagielski in 9-1-1 STAR Support if needed. • Support will be given on the GUM, composition/essay, and Vocabulary portions of Language Skills B throughout the year. • You are required to read one of two novels this year, The Hobbit and Treasure Island. During the first semester, Mrs. Jagielski will be completing a unit on The Hobbit. Information will be given as to when this will begin. In addition, there are three units (Units 3, 14 & 18) in which you need to select a book from a list of novel choices.

17. Language Arts Assignment • To be completed by Sept. 2nd • Language Skills B: Complete Unit 1 Composition--Introduction to the Essay (lessons 1-6) • Literature B: Select & begin a novel to read from Unit 3. Do one lesson daily until complete. • **see supply list sent in k-mail

20. Supplemental Hours • You may log up to 12 supplemental hours per week. • These include, but are not limited to, Study Island, technology hours, Physical Education, music and health. There are separate attendance spots to log these hours on your daily log in screen. • You may only log 72 hours of P.E. for the year. A minimum of 36 hours are required for the year!

21. Progress • Students must make steady weekly progress to successfully learn. • Progress of 12-15% per month in every subject is expected. You should be completing at least 3% progress each week in each subject. • All students are required to meet minimum progress levels to be promoted, regardless of enrollment date. • Failure to log adequate progress results in truancy. • Mrs. Jagielski and Mrs. Nelson also complete weekly progress sweeps. Anyone who is behind in progress will receive a notice immediately.

22. Study Island • Study Island is NOT optional! It is used as a reinforcement tool of concepts learned in the K12 curriculum and helps prepare for PARCC testing. • Students are to complete their SI Pathway assignments each week with the goal of earning Blue Ribbons (at least 10 questions with 70% mastery). If a Blue Ribbon is not earned, students will be required to attend a SI review session on that concept. • Students are expected to earn Blue Ribbons in ALL Study Island Pathway assignments in Math, Reading & Science by the end of March.

23. SI Benchmarks • SI Benchmarks are short assessments taken as indicators of how students are progressing on the grade 7 Common Core Indicators. • These will be taken two times throughout the year: weeks of November 10th & February 2nd

24. Scantron • Scantron tests are taken twice a year in Reading and Math. • First tests completed in Fall (by end of first week of school) and second completed in Spring (May 4-8). • This is an adaptive test that shows a measure of a student’s growth over the school year.

25. PARCC ASSESSMENTS • All students must takethese state mandated tests for their grade level. • Grade 7 takes Reading & Math • PARCC Assessments will be given in April (13-30?)– more info to come • Failure to take these tests will lead to a dismissal from OHVA the following year. Emergency situations will be considered individually.
