  1. The Truth About Soy -- Busting the Myths And Learning the Benefits Dr. Steve Chaney, PhD Joanette Coogan Barbara Lagoni Harper Guerra

  2. Urban Myths Often Start With a Blog or Web site • Message is based on bias of the authors • Confuse animal studies with clinical studies • The authors choose clinical studies selectively to support their bias • Message is always spectacular • Never let facts get in the way of a good story Some of those web sites are authored by doctors • They have their biases, too • If the “headlines” are always about… • “Miracle foods or nutrients” that prevent “X”…or… • Foods or supplements that might just kill you…and… • The “establishment” isn’t telling you about it • You know they can’t all be true steve

  3. “Urban Myths” Continued Doctors and Health Organizations Have Their Biases • If their bias happens to be anti-supplement, the “burden • of proof” is often applied unequally • Single studies showing benefit are ignored • Single studies showing harm are emphasized And then there is the media • They have their biases, also • They aren’t trained in how to interpret scientific studies • It is the “spectacular” – the bad news - that sells subscriptions And once the story has been repeated often enough it becomes generally accepted as true… steve …It becomes an “Urban Myth”

  4. Soy Myths Breast cancer Diminishes male sexuality ( 15 studies refute ) Increases risk of prostate cancer ( studies show decrease risk, decreases PSA levels ) Increases hypothyroidism ( underactive thyroid) ( 20 studies refute .. Soy can inhibit absorption of thyroid medications so , just like with any other food, wait an hour before eating ) Unless soy is fermented, it is bad for you. ( references for these statements can be found at www.HealthTipsFromtheProfessor.com Truth About Soy video) steve.

  5. Soy and Breast Cancer Claim: “Soy consumption increases the risk of breast cancer in women” Fears are based on animal studies (and those are mixed)1 • Soy consumption over a lifetime decreases risk of breast cancer by 25-58%2 But what about women who have had breast cancer? A recent study with 5,000 subjects asked that question3 Breast cancer survivors with highest soy intake had: • 25% less chance of breast cancer recurrence • 25% less chance of dying from breast cancer 1Journal of Nutrition, 132: 3186-3190, 2008 2Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention, 18: 1050-1059, 2009 steve 3JAMA, 302: 2437-2443, 2009

Health Risks Associated With Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)To People… To the Environment 2 types of Genetic Engineering • Modification to DNA – -- Some plants have been modified to produce pesticides ( to kill bugs eating their leaves) -- Bacteria in human intestines pick up some of that modified DNA and theoretically could produce the same pesticides. • Modifications to Proteins Result from modifications to DNA --Can cause allergic reactions

  9. GMO and The Environment • Genetic modifications of crops to make them resistant to herbicides ( Round-Up Ready) … encourages the overuse of pesticides to compensate. • As farmers increasingly rely on GMO plants, there is a decrease in genetic diversity, making those crops more susceptible to new viruses or pests in the future. Good News –There are some GMO Products To NOT Be Concerned About No scientific evidence that sugars, oils, other nutrients extracted from foods are dangerous or different from non-GMO . ..
