  8. • Phytoplanton • Nasa says that Phytoplanton is responsible for 90⁰⁄₀ of the Earths oxygen • Phytoplanton has tissue lighter than water • one of Phytoplanton’s adaption is blending in • the word phyto means light and the word planton means floating Plants, phytoplanton

Plants, Seaweed • Seaweed lives in shallow water • Seaweed doesn’t plant it’s roots in the oceans floor but when growing it plants its roots on a rock • Seaweed’s strong roots keep it in the water and not on the shore • the waxy coating on Seaweed is used to protect it from water loss and animals • Seaweed that grows on the ocean floor is likely to have toxin in it

  10. Plants, Kelp • Kelps roots of Kelp grow on soil and rocks • Kelp has a strong and fast growing steam • Kelps blades (leaves) can reach the surface using a gass filled compartment

  11. Plants, Sea Grass • one of Sea Grasses adaption’s is that they changed from fresh water to salt water • Sea Grass blades come from the steams • Sea Grass steams are called rizones

Jelly fish – long stinging strings • Octopus – has a hard covering called a mantle • Sea horse – placement of eyes allow it to see predators in almost all directions • Flounder – has both eyes on One side of its head to hide under the sand and be able to see its prey coming • Sharks – camo on back and underbelly • Squid – mantle as protection, ink to defend itself • Sea urchin – large spines to defend itself from predators Ocean animal adaptations

Marine mammal adaptations • Blue whale - has big mass as support when diving deep • Dolphin – makes clicking noises to find food and communicate • Orca whale – very fast swimmer (can swim up to 30 miles hr) • Beluga whale – blubber to keep warm, flippers to move smoothly through the water • Narwhal – has a big tooth that can poke through ice

  14. Land mammal adaptations • Polar bear – has black skin to absorb the sun • Seals – fur and blubber protecting them from the cold and claws for grooming • Sea otter – strong claws to break open shells • Walrus – tusks to protect babies and lots of blubber • Sea turtle – paddle like flippers t move though water easily, cold blooded which allows them to stay under water longer
