Concision Of language. What does it mean to be concise?. Being concise means to give a lot of detailed information in detailed way that is not very wordy (using fewer words). When writing concise sentences, you should be brief and to the point.

What does it mean to be concise? • Being concise means to give a lot of detailed information in detailed way that is not very wordy (using fewer words). • When writing concise sentences, you should be brief and to the point. • Concise language should also be clear and easily understood. • Writing in a concise way does NOT mean leaving out details. It is writing that is clear and to the point.

  3. Bad example… There is a bus driver who has red hair who likes to sing all the way to school. How can this be said in a way that is more concise?

  4. Better way… The red-headed bus driver sings all the way to school.

  5. What does it mean to be precise? • Being precise means being accurate. • Precise language is not lacking detail or important information to make something make sense. • EXAMPLE: It crossed the street.

  6. Bad example… • It walked slowly though the woods.

  7. Better way… • The anxious hunter walked through the woods while hunting for a deer.

  8. Practice-- concise • The silly girl who sings all day long that also talks a lot is at school today. • The loud dog barked at the children. It also is a very big and unfriendly dog.

  9. Practice--precise • It swim in the stream. • He watched a happy movie.

  10. Combine sentences Original: A professor was giving a lecture to a room full of college students on global warming. The students appeared to be very bored and uninterested. Can this sentence be combined to be more concise?

  11. Ways to combine sentences • Comma and a conjunction • Semicolon • Conjunctive adverb • Appositive

  12. Comma + conjunction • A professor was giving a lecture to many college students, and they looked boredand uninterested.

  13. Semicolon • A professor was giving a lecture to many college students;they looked boredand uninterested.

  14. Conjunctive adverbs • Conjunctive adverbs connect sentences together using a semi colon and a comma. Example: • A professor was giving a lecture to many college students; however, they looked bored and uninterested.

  15. example I really do not like snow because that means it is cold outside. I like snow ,though, when it means that there is no school. • I do not like snow because that means it is cold outside; however, I like it when there is a snow day.

  17. appositives • An appositive is a noun or a phrase that act as a noun that is placed in the middle of a sentence and is separated by commas. Example: My friend is coming over after school today. His name is Joe. • My friend, Joe, is coming over after school today.

  18. example My friend that I am visiting tomorrow lives in Michigan. She is in the seventh grade. • My friend, a seventh grader, that I amvisiting tomorrow is from Michigan.

  19. Practice • Make the following sentences more concise. • I walked to the store yesterday to buy eggs, milk, and flour in order to make a cake for my birthday. My birthday is on Wednesday and several people will be coming over to my house for a small party. • I need my mom to bring me an extra change of clothes while I am at school so that I can change for the dance. The dance is going to be after school and semi-formal attire is required. I am currently wearing sweatpants and a hoodie.
