  7. Pay Gap in Germany • 23 % • The average woman earns 750 € less per month than her male counterpart. • The pay gap gets bigger the older you are. • The pay gap still exists on all levels, even if you are well educated, regardless of your position.

  8. Causes of the Income Gap • In Germany the self-image of men and women is based upon historical stereotypes. Women: • work in lower paying jobs • usually have fewer years on the job due to more frequent family breaks • frequently work part-time • are rarely in well paying leadership and executive positions • frequently work in small businesses • experience unequal treatment • do not negotiate well

Beginnings of the EPD • EPD marks the day to which have to work in order to earn the same amount of money their male counterparts made in the previous year • The red purse is a symbol of the economic discrimination against women: especially the red figures in the purses of women • In 1988, Business and Professional Women started the Red Purse Campaign in the USA • In 2007, BPW launched the first Red Purse Campaign in Germany

Equal Pay Day a worldwide movement • EPD was started by BPW / USA • BPW / Germany followed the idea and very successfully launched EPD in 2008 • Other countries joined and organized EPD in their countries • BPW International then started an EPD Awareness Campaign to give this idea to worldwide attention

What happened in Germany? • 2008 BPW started the first EPD • From the beginning other women‘s organisations followed, i.e. German Womens Council and BAG (Working Committee of municipal women‘s representatives) • BPW Germany received financial support form the Ferderal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth

EPD in Germany • In 2009 BPW Germany could convince other organisations to join the campaign for EPD. • Besides women‘s organisations including unions and political parties we also got the Conferderation of German Employers on board. • All of the above founded a National Action Committee for EPD under the following motto:

  14. National Alliance for EPD • „Entgeltgleichheit schaffen – Ursachen angehen“ achieve equal payment – eliminate causes • Aims: • Public debate about the reasons of the Pay Gap in Germany • Mobilize the public figures • Show career opportunities in different professions

Germany: Equal Pay DayEvents and Activities • During their lunchbreaks, women dine or meet up in town wearing the red purse pin • Cafes and restaurants honor an „Unhappy Hour“ between noon and 2:00 p.m. • Retailers offer 22% discount, directing attention towards the 22% wage gap between men and women in Germany • Shops decorate the shop windows with red purses and other items • Information desks and activities in public areas draw the attention of others to the differences of remuneration

Germany: Equal Pay Day • Events in which women • Travel on the red London bus through Göttingen • March around lake Maschsee in Hannover • Meet at Marienplatz in Munich • Meet at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin • Red balloons rise in the air above the city hall in Bremen • Talks on the topic of wage disparity • Workshops focussed on wage negotiations and other relevant matters • Panel discussions

What have we done so far? • German Women‘s Council • Established a working group with BPW Germany and a lot of other member organisations, such as unions, political parties and professional organisations. • We discussed the causes of the pay gap in Germany and our demands and recommendations. • We finished with a common statement, presented, discussed and adopted by the general assembly of the German Women‘s Council. • We published a little booklet called „Entgeltgleich!“ • meaning „money now!“.

  29. Finding your Equal Pay Day. • multiply: 52 weeks x 5 working days x country‘s wage difference in % • equals (=) • days that women have to work to earn the same that a man earned in the previous year. • The last day in that equation starting 1st January is • Equal Pay Day!

  30. International Activity Portal • Introducing an international activity portal • www.equal-pay-day.com • This site will propagate the EPD awareness campaign. • It will show the different national Equal Pay Days and give links to your national Equal Pay Day sites.

  31. Results and Demands • We have to raise awareness and mobilize involved actors • Companies should have a transparent remuneration system • There should be evaluation systems free of discrimination • More women have to be employed full-time (less unpaid work) • More women should be in leadership positions • More women should be in committees or in executive positions (proportion) • Basic conditions for employed mothers have to be improved • We have to strengthen women so they can act independently and with confidence • We have to remove differences between industries
