  1. Camp Little Giant- Dyna Camp Presented by: Alexa Scheibel Southwest District Representative

  2. A Little About Little Giant • Camp Little Giant’s Dyna Camp is a summer camp for children with ADHD. • It is located on Little Grassy Lake in Carbondale. • The Lake and Shawnee National Forest provide for many activities for Little Giant Campers.

  3. A Little More About Little Giant • The camp has been in existence since 1953. • One of the founders of Special Olympics helped to establish Camp Little Giant. • It is recognized as the first residential camp serving individuals with disabilities as part of a University. • Little Giant is a not for profit organization.

  4. Campers • Camp Little Giant serves 50 –100 children each summer. • The campers come from Carbondale, surrounding areas, and mostly Illinois. • The campers who attend camp have a variety of disabilities, but the Dyna Camp is a week long camp serving kids with ADHD.

  5. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder • ADHD affects 1 in 11 children between the ages of 4 and 17. • It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes those affected to have problems with attention, impulsivity, and overactivity. • Children suffering from ADHD often have difficulty with school and peer relationships. • Camp Little Giant gives kids suffering from this disability the chance to interact with others just like themselves.

  6. Activities This camp offers so many activities for the kids to participate in. They include paddle boat and pontoon boat cruises, sports and games, expressive and traditional arts and crafts, music and drama, nature hikes and related activities, horseback riding, hayrides, talent shows, dances, special events, team building activities, fishing, and campfires.

  7. Why Camp Little Giant? • I realized that there are a very great number of people who suffer from ADHD. • ADHD is a growing problem with no known cause. • I have friends and family who struggle daily with this disorder. • When I read about Camp Little Giant, I knew I wanted to be a part of helping children with ADHD attend camp, make memories, and sharing experiences with new friend that will last a lifetime.
