  1. Welcome to Durham!

  2. Group Sessions 2pm JCR in Grey college Be prepared to talk and listen!

  3. Groups The first part of the session will have you split into groups based on your intended subject area. A current PhD student will give you a brief summary of their personal experience of doing a PhD and any answer questions you may have.

  4. Split by Subject There will be six groups: A) Exoplanets, brown dwarfs, debris disks B) Star-formation, stellar astrophysics C) Pulsars, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts D) Galaxy evolution and AGN E) Cosmology F) Instrumentation

  5. After the first groups you will split into smaller groups based on various things. The aim is to make the personal connections between you that will make this course more enjoyable and also give you a network of friends around the country that you can call on for help and support for years to come…..

  6. Take a note of these numbers… Our first small groups will be on intended University and will be the teams for tonights Pub Quiz.

  9. Second number Next we’d like to split you on where you call “home”. This could be tricky for some of you so if in doubt pick where you were just before you started University.

  10. Outside UK • Scotland • Wales and Northern Ireland • North East • Yorkshire • North West • West Midlands • East Midlands • East Anglia • South West • South East • Greater London (M25 and a bit beyond)
