Students will learn how to administer nail care. • Students will discuss the procedures of administering nail care.   5. Administering Nail Care Why is it important to provide nail care? Equipment & Supplies Providing nail care eliminates the growth of bacteria Orange Stick Emery Board Nail Clippers Water & Detergent in Basin Towel Plastic Bag Pen or Pencil

  6. Procedures • Check MD order • Assemble eqp • IWIPE • Introduce yourself • Wash your hands • Identify the pt • Provide privacy • Explain procedure

  7. Procedures • Elevate bed to a comfortable working height, lower bed rails • Soak the nails for 5-10 min in detergent & H20 (oil can be used) • Use the edge of the orange stick to clean dirt from under the nail bed

  8. Procedures • Use short strokes c/ emery board to file the nails and shorten them. Work from the side of the nail to the top. Repeat on opposite side. • Use nail clippers to cut the nails straight across if necessary. Be careful not to injure the skin around the nail. • Nevercut toenails. • File them straight across.

  9. Procedures Use the smooth side of the emery board to eliminate rough edges. Make sure that the nails are filed straight across. To help keep the nails and cuticles in good condition apply lotion to the hands.

  10. Procedures • Apply lotion to the hands and feet. Do not apply lotion b/w toes b/c this promotes growth of fungus. • Position the patientin correct body alignment. • Observe all checkpoints before leaving: • elevate the side rails, • place the call signal, water, and tissues c/in easy reach • lower the bed • leave the area clean.

  11. Procedures Clean and properly replace all equipment used. Report that nail care has been given and record all required information on patient’s chart. Wash hands

  12. Precautions • Wear gloves • Using the pointed edge of the orange stick can result in a punctured wound • If any redness, excessive dryness, or cracking of the skin is noted, report this to your supervisor • Do not use scissors. They can cut the pt.

  14. Equipment & Supplies Bed linen Laundry Hamper Two wash cloths Two towels Soap Basin Clean Gown Hair, Nail, & Oral Hygiene care Lotion Gloves

  15. Procedures • Check orders for procedure • Assemble equipment • IWIPE

  16. Steps 1 2 Elevate bed to comfortable working height and lower bed rail on the side you’re working on Replace top linen with a bath linen (same linen being reused, fanfoldit to the knees of the pt, not reusing bed linenthrow into hamper )

  17. Steps 3 4 Fill a basin 2/3 full with warm water from 105-110 degrees Form a wash cloth mitten

  18. Wet washcloth, squeeze excess water • Wash pt’sface first c/out soap • Start c/ eyes (inner to outer) • You can also wash their hair, shavept’sface, brush their teeth, and clean their nails Steps 5

  19. Steps 6 7 Place towel under body part you are washing If any signs of redness, bumps, or sores report immediately Turn patient in prone position to clean the back

  20. Female VS. Male • Females: • Separate the labia and clean in a front to back motion • Males: • Clean tip of penis in a circular motion • If they are not circumcised, draw back the foreskin, cleanse the area, then gently return the foreskin to its normal position.

  21. Observe all check points • Clean your station • Put all dirty linens in the hamper • Put the hamper into proper area • Take off gloves • Wash your hands • Report that you have completed the bed bath Final Step
