  3. The Shining Light 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”(Matthew 5:14-16)

  4. Light 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. (Genesis 1:1-3)

  5. Light vs. Darkness • Jesus, the eternal Word, is the true light: The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1:5)

  7. Light Represents God’s Word • Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105) • Those who walk in sin, apart from God’s Word, walk in darkness (Ecclesiastes 2:14, 1 John 2:11)

Light Represents Salvation 19 “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God. (John 3:19-21)

  12. Two Effects • Slow down the moral decay of society as salt • Shine the light of God’s truth/salvation • Salt deters decay – light dispels darkness • Salt retards corruption – light reveals Christ • Salt works secretly – light works openly
