Sinead Healy Resource Manager My job is to manage our budgeting and make sure the team has all the materials we need. Team Silent Fusion ‘ Let the car do the talking Callum Mc Carthy Design Engineer I have sketched possible design ideas for our car and produced images of our car using Solid Works. PadraigBlanchfield Graphic Designer I’m in charge of designing the car, logo and colour scheme. Conor O’Shea Manufacturing Engineer I am in charge of the manufacturing of our team’s car.

  3. RESEARCH Aerodynamics Balsa Wood Ochromapyramidale, commonly known as the balsa tree, is a species of flowering plant. Balsa wood is a very lightweight material with many uses. Balsa trees are native to Southern Brazil and Mexico. It is very soft and light, with a coarse, open grain. The creation of down force, helps push the car’s tyres onto the track and improve cornering forces which minimises the drag that’s caused by turbulence and slows down the car. As it is low-density but high in strength, balsa is a very popular material to use when making light, stiff structures. A cars' wings work on the same principle as aeroplane wings, but in reverse. Aeroplane wings create lift but the wings on a Formula 1 car produce down force, which holds the car onto the track. The angle of both front and rear wings can be adjusted and fine-tuned to get the ideal balance between air resistance and down force.

Design Progress This is the progress we have made in the design and manufacturing of our Formula 1 car: Progression of our car: Original sketch of our car We started by not knowing much about f1 cars. We researched all about aerodynamics to get a better idea. We had to learn how to sketch and we developed our sketching skills and then we sketched different designs for our f1 car and we used solid works to make our car 3D. In the future we hope to further analyse and improve the aerodynamics of our car. Current orthographic view of car OUR GOAL: To create the most aerodynamic car possible and qualify for the Nationals.
