  1. RAP Researched by Prince Gyamfi

  2. What is Rap music ? • Rap started during the early '70's in New York by young D.J's making mix tapes, while MC's like Coke La Rock were developing rhyme routines. • In 1979 The Sugar Hill Gang released 'Rapper's Delight' which formed rap in the future. • Although a title that may not be instantly familiar, this tune was extremely popular and well known for its time, and has been re sampled for newer artists in the present day.

  3. History of rap music • Rap developed from African individuals in general and black people born in the U.S. in particular, its origins can be traced to West Africa. • Later when slaves were brought to the New World, the captives mixed American melody with the beats they remembered from Africa. • A couple years afterwards, rapping was a street art. Rap then started to begin in school playgrounds and street corners in the 1970's. • This music style was slowly rising in status with black teens all over the Usa. As early as 1974 neighborhood block parties in New York featured early forms of rapping.

  4. Main Artists • Run DMC- When you speak of classic rap, you would have to talk about Run DMC, the threesome that put rap on the map. Whilst there were predecessors to the group, DMC were attractive to the masses and became the first universally acceptable band of it's kind. • Tupac Shakur- His lyrical content generally embodied all that was bad about the rap lifestyle, which included drugs, crime and other anti-social behaviour.

  5. Eminem Early Life • Eminem was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972 in Saint Joseph, Missouri, as the only child of Deborah R. Nelson Mathers-Briggs and Marshall Bruce Mathers. Jr. • His father abandoned the family when he was 18 months old, and he was raised solely by his mother in poverty. By the age of 12, Mathers and his mother had moved between various cities.

  6. Eminem • In the early 1999 the rap genre had an upcoming star and the world of rap had a revolution. White men were not famous for being rappers. • However with the catchy number "My Name Is", Eminem, real name 'Marshall Mathers' came onto the scene, and changed the image of rap. He had already recorded underground material, with an official album entitled "Infinite", which had a calm entrance onto the scene. • However his number one smash "My Name Is" heralded the way for the "Slim Shady" LP, and then as of last year the "Marshall Mathers" album.

  7. Eminem Lyrics • Hi kids! Do you like violence? • Wanna see me stick Nine Inch Nails through each one of my eyelids? • Wanna copy me and do exactly like I did? • Try 'cid and get fucked up worse that my life is? • My brain's dead weight, I'm trying to get my head straight • But I can't figure out which Spice Girl I want to impregnate • The lyrics used by Eminem expresses anger and violence, this may be because of his hard depressing childhood he grew up in. He tries to get his own opinion into teenagers and you children's head.

  8. Competition • The Sourceis a United States-based, monthly full-colour magazine covering hip-hop and rap music, politics, and culture, founded in 1988.  In order for ‘Source” to appeal to younger consumers, Source has made minor changes to provide it a more modern look, including changing the font. • XXL is a hip hop and rap magazine, founded by past  source staffer. It is only distributed in the USA. • Vibeis a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B, Rap and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers.

  9. Record Labels • Def Jam- Def Jam Recordings is an American rap record label. Def Jam was created by Rick Rubin in his dorm room at New York University. The label is home to Nas, DMX, and many more. This record label use to be independent but now is owned by universal. • Bad Boys-Bad Boy Records was a record label founded in 1993 by producer/rapper/entrepreneur Sean "Diddy" Combs and Mark Pitts. The label is home to The Notorious B.I.G., Rick Ross and many more.

  10. Public Perception • The rest of society and teenager have a different perception on the rap genre. • The rest of society think rap just suggests violence and its going against the government and police. However teenagers tend to enjoy it because of the concept , they talk about there lifestyle and anti establishment. • Eminem • The press have accused Eminem of his lyrics suggesting he hates all gays.

  11. Cross media • Black Entertainment Television, currently viewed in more than 90 million homes worldwide, it is the most prominent television network targeting young Black American audiences. Most programming of the network comprises mainstream rap, hip-hop and R&B .   • MTV Base is a digital television channel which began in the United Kingdom. Most programming of the network comprises mainstream rap, hip-hop, Rock, Alternative, Afrobeat, Kwaito, Reggae and R&B .

  12. Conclusion • Within the years that rap has been in reality, the names have transformed and so has the representation. • Female stars like Lil' Kim and Missy Elliot have begun to come into their own in a formerly male dominated environment. • The music style has become more severe, portraying the way life has changed over the years. • As a fan of this style, I feel it is unfortunate that a good form of lyrical piece of music is lost in the background of negativity and wider issues. Despite the fact that some of the personalities I have mentioned here are not the kind one would wish to introduce to their daughters, it should not degrade their own specific talent in what they strive to do for their fans.
