  2. Objectives • To stage a Club event for National Construction Week • To engage the Club with local Construction education • To engage local education with construction and the Club • To provide a large number of school children with a taste of what Construction could be like as a career

  3. Hands-on tastes provided to 150 school children • Brickwork • Surveying • Paviours • Carpentry • Plumbing City of Wolverhampton College Sponsor

  4. Stourbridge College • Hands-on tastes provided to 90 school children • Brickwork • Painting & Decorating • Carpentry • Electrical Installation • CAD • Bridge Building & Structures • Structural Engineering design Sponsor

  5. Walsall College • Hands-on tastes provided to 50 school children • Brickwork • Painting & Decorating • Carpentry • Graphic Design Sponsor Sheppard Construction

  6. Sandwell College • Hands-on tastes offered to 60 school children • Brickwork • Painting & Decorating • Carpentry • Plastering Unfortunately all schools pulled out 2 days before the event Sponsor

  7. Meetings with 4 construction training College providers to get their buy-in • Selecting the age group to involve – 11 to 13 year olds? Yet to make GCSE and career choices • Discussions with ConstructionSkills to gain support • Agreeing common themes and timetables with Colleges to suit them and Schools • Registering the event on the National Construction Week web site • Setting a budget - finding Sponsors • Trying to get press and sponsor coverage • Finalising target numbers • Planning hand-out Goody Bags and obtaining contents • Considering Health & Safety • Producing Goody Bags (Bought goods, ConstructionSkills donations and College goods) • Officers getting time off work to attend event Club Preparation

College & School Preparation • Colleges • College Faculty Heads selling the idea to Principals and Staff • Securing lecturers/trainers for the “hands-on” sessions • Getting College Students buy-in to taking part • Fitting the event around their busiest time – enrolment • Contacting the Schools and obtaining their participation • Helping with transport • Sorting out College contents for Goody Bags • Considering Health & Safety • Schools • Getting Teachers to change their curriculum plan • Letter to Parents & Permission Slips • Organising a school trip • Considering Health & Safety

Lessons Learned • Consider ALL Religious holidays • Understand School timetables • Expect to have to help with Transport • Teachers perceptions of Construction - Gender error! • College calendar issues – NCW comes right on top of enrolment • Many Officers hands make lighter effort • Press only like bad news • Final numbers likely to be less than target by a long way – so aim high • Selected age of children can isolate some opportunities – e.g. working with Barnados • You cannot start too early

All 4 Colleges wanted to take part • 290 primary school children had a hands-on taste of Construction they enjoyed • Large number of female participants • Children were enthusiastic, well behaved and interested – chose the right age for engagement • 2 Sponsors supplied PPE so children got H&S message too • Lecturers, even the sceptics, were won over and want to do it again next year • Club got its name publicised – one sponsor ran an article in the Birmingham Mail • A first for CE Clubs • 3 Colleges had not done anything for National Construction Week for many years Measuring Success What if? 5% of those 290 children choose Construction as a result of a chance nobody else was going to give them?

  11. Yes - despite the hard work None of the people who attend normal Club meetings usually look like this! Will We Do It Again?
