  2. About the owner • Heidi� Morris is an avid collector of vintage items and apparel and owner of JunQie's, a hip second-hand shop on Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point. Morris opened the treasure trove of a shop in January to much fanfare among the vintage and thrift shoppers of all ages. In fact, shoppers came by for weeks before the opening, peeking in the windows and begging for a look inside.

  3. JUNQIE’S “We put the funk in junk” • JUNQIE’S is an independently owned vintage clothing store thriving in a recession plagued retail environment • Inventory is located from local estate sales, and donations from private closets • This combination of buying and donations creates a unique collection of vintage clothing and accessories.

  4. Objective of Professional Development Opportunity • Gain knowledge of vintage apparel industry • Expand understanding of fashion history • Explore the impact of older fashion styles on current fashion trends • Discover the merchandising solutions for a retail vintage boutique

A typical day at JUNQIE’S – the inventory • Accept donations of new vintage clothing • Inspect each piece of clothing for stains, rips, missing buttons, belts, and broker zippers • Sort clothing by decade of style • Price clothing • Integrate new inventory into store merchandising • Rotate merchandise on mannequins, end racks, and shadow box displays

  6. A typical day at JUNQIE’S-the customer Who are the customers? • Everyone! men, women, and children. They sell silly string and Matchbox cars to kids, and vintage items to 97-year-old members of the Red Hat Society • Men love our bowling shirts and Western "cowboy" shirts. And this town is so wild about theme parties, so they sell a lot of clothing for costumes. They recently had a customer who hosted a "Dynasty" party.

  7. A typical day at JUNQIE’S-the customer cont… • Assist customer and determine their interest • Explain layout and suggest various decades to explore • Recommend jewelry and accessories that complement clothing • Complete packaging and processing cash or credit on the register • Have fun!

Lessons gathered… • An appreciation for all the work and decisions made before inventory reaches the displays • A fascination with of the history of fashion and design • A commitment to integrating fashion history into ROP curriculum • Develop an initial lesson plan aligned with the fashion history classes at Saddleback College

At The conclusion of the assignment, students will be able to identify a design From previous decades and identify the influences on modern design.

Fashion History “Then and Now” • Directions: 30 minute lecture with PowerPoint presentation showing important designs and facts from each decade • Students will be asked to pick their favorite decade and utilize the school library for research. • Research will include: Political, fashion icons, music, movies, celebrities, and inventions. • Students will define five fashion styles from their decade. • Students will match up selected fashion styles with styles from current fashion magazines. • Students will create a storyboard from their research and share with class orally.

  11. Fashion History “Then and Now” • Evaluation • Key important elements of fashion history will be reviewed • Students will research a fashion history report on chosen decade • A collection of “Then and Now” history pictures will be included • A student fashion show will be coordinated and will include appropriate fashions from each decade • A fashion history test will be given at the end of the semester
