  8. Main characteristics • Extrastat • Dependent on Customs rules • ≈ Total coverage (excl.e.g. tourists) • Intrastat • Direct collection of information from companies • A close link with the VAT system • A threshold system

Scope Records on the physical movement of goods • Intrastat • Community goods • Goods in free circulation • Goods which enter/leave the statistical territory of the reporting Member State supplied from or bound for another Member State; • Traded by VAT registered companies • Extrastat • Non Community goods Lodged by Customs • Special trade system (no Transit, Warehouses, Free zones) • Some goods are excluded for methodological reasons • For some goods particular provisions are applied

Data collection Extrastat • Individuals or companies fill in Customs declarations in view to export out or import in the European Community • Customs provide monthly declarations to the national statistical administration Intrastat • Parties registered for VAT in the reporting Member State • which have concluded the trade contract, • provide monthly Intrastat declarations directly to the national administration National administration transmit statistics to Eurostat
