  2. What are they? • Core question • Probe deep issues confronting people

  3. Traits • Question probes a matter of considerable importance • Question involves moving beyond understanding or studying and points towards the settlement of a challenge, making of a choice, or forming of a decision

  4. Traits continued • Cannot be answered quickly with “yes” or “no” • Question evolves • Question may not have a definitive answer • Question may frustrate researcher and not reach for understanding or clarity

  5. Are not… • Essential questions are not just BIG questions that cover a large area. • They are focused questions that help probe deeply into a topic.

  6. Creating an Essential Question • Open-ended Questions • Provide more than yes or no answers. Explanation, exploration, and elaboration are required. • Closed Questions • Require quick answers • “Yes” or “No”

  7. Open-ended Example • What were the positive and negative consequences of the Revolutionary War and how do these continue to impact people today? If they do not, what has changed in our society to make these consequences obsolete?

  8. Closed Example • Were there negative and positive consequences of the Revolutionary War that continue to impact us today?

  9. Question Exercise • Create three closed questions. • Create three open-ended questions.

  10. Essential Question Creation • Look at the essential questions that you wrote yesterday. • Will they help you probe deeply into your research topic? Change them if needed. • How will these questions help you? If they do not seem to, get rid of them. If they seem like they will, keep them.
