  19. The Great Depression: 1929-1940 • As a result of many factors, the: • Unemployment rate was at 25% • Banks went out of business • Everyone lost money • Long lines outside of job offices • Food pantries and soup kitchens were a common sight

  20. Technology and Entertainment • People often went out to see movies with their friends and families. • When at home, people spent a lot of time playing board games and watching black and white TV.

  21. Technology and Entertainment • Radio was rapidly becoming a mass media. Families and friends would congregate around the radio to listen to the news, reports and even soap operas in the evening. • TVs, however small, were gaining in popularity- though very few households were lucky enough to have them.

  22. 1930s Clothing • The Great Depression began in 1929 and ended in the early 1940’s. This had a huge affect on women and men’s fashion. • Changing clothes twice a day became unfashionable and women were often mending or sewing their clothes in order to wear them longer. • Men were in suits as much as possible and women were often found in dresses.

  23. Social Customs • People often spoke of baseball, dancing, and politics- anything to get their attention away from the Great Depression. • Etiquette: Appropriate Conduct • Girls were to be girls and boys were to be boys.

Historical Events & World Leaders • Adolf Hitler was becoming a more powerful leader in Europe. • Germany coming out of a recession • The Great Depression haunts America throughout the 1930s to 1940 • President Franklin D Roosevelt was in office in the US. • Trying to bring up American morale

  26. Discuss. Take a moment to think about what you know or have just learned about the 1930s. Now think about what you know about tolerance and prejudice in the 1930s? Any connections?

  28. Scout Real name: Jean-Louise Finch Main character. The story is told from her perspective. Extremely bright but gets in trouble often. She is a six year old tomboywho is learning about her segregated environment. We follow her on this journey.

  30. Jem Real name: Jeremy Finch Scout’s older brother by four years. Matures throughout the story. Understands more about society than Scout. Jem is a protective force in Scout’s life.

  34. Calpurnia Calpurnia is the Finch family housekeeper. She is beloved by Scout, Jem and Atticus Cal is much like a surrogate mother for Jem and Scout She teaches Scout to write and often talks her through important lessons
