Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger • Born on January 23, 1951 in Grayson County, Texas • American airline transport pilot safety expert and accident investigator • Formerly US Airways Captain best known for Flight 1549 • Now resides in California with his wife Lorrie and adopted daughters, Kate and Kelly

Jeffrey Zaslow • Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1958 • American journalist and a columnist for The Wall Street Journal. • His column “Moving On” focuses on life transitions and often attracts wide media interest • Author or coauthor of three bestselling books: • The Last Lecture (2008) with Randy Pausch • Highest Duty with Capt. ChesleySullenberger (2009) • The Girl From Ames

  5. Key Themes • Throughout the book, ChesleySullenberger uses numerous examples and stories to illustrate many of the same leadership themes. Specifically, he talks about the following: • Professionalism in management • Learning from others mistakes, being thankful • Rising to the occasion • Drawing on your knowledge and skill to create new and effective solutions • Recognizing that everyone is of value and necessary to create a successful result.

Effectively Leading in His “New Career” as a National Hero • After retiring from US Airways on March 3, 2010, Sully used his newly found fame as a national leader: • International speaker on airline safety • Helped to develop new protocols for airline safety. • Co-chairman of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles youth introduction-to-aviation. • Ranked 2nd in TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009. • Testified before the U.S. House of Representative's Subcommittee on Aviation of the Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure on February 24, 2009, regarding the unethical cut of salaries and pensions of airline pilots.

True Leader & Man of Character • A few weeks after the crash, it was revealed that Sullenberger had lost a library book about professional ethics, Just Culture: Balancing Safety and Accountability, in the plane's cargo hold. When Sullenberger telephoned the library to notify them of the lost book, it waived the usual fees. New York City Mayor Bloomberg replaced the book when presenting Sullenberger with the Key to the City of New York

  18. Conclusion • Book filled with take home themes of leadership and heroism • Specifically, Sully’s military experience, optimism, and positive expectations led to the successful emergency landing of Flight 1549 and saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew. Questions?
