  1. 1. At the beginning of this scene, Shakespeare “sets the stage” by having the characters tell what the weather is like. How does the weather seem to breed trouble? It is hot, making people uncomfortable and irritable.

  2. Who renews the quarrel between the families? Why? 2. Tybalt. He wants to fight Romeo for coming to the Capulet party.

  3. Which character tries to be the peacemaker? 3. Benvolio (and Romeo)

  4. Why does Romeo refuse Tybalt’s first challenge? 4. He just (that day) married Tybalt’s cousin, Juliet.

  5. Why does Mercutio say “a plague on both your houses!”? 5. He is cursing both families for the feud that has caused his own death.

  6. Why does Romeo finally assume personal responsibility for avenging Mercutio’s death? 6. Mercutio was fighting for Romeo; Romeo came between them, which allowed Tybalt to stab Mercutio under Romeo’s arm.

  7. Why does Romeo call himself fortune’s fool? 7. He feels like fate is toying with him and causing all of his bad luck.

  10. 1. Describe the emotional roller coaster Juliet is on as she comes to understand the nurse’s news. At first she is so happy and excited to be married, then the nurse makes her think Romeo is dead, then she realizes he’s not dead, but banished for killing her cousin, and she’ll never see him again.

  15. According to the friar, what steps must be taken to safeguard Romeo? 6. He can go see Juliet that night, but he should leave Verona early, so he’s not caught; he should stay in Mantua until Friar can fix their situation.
