  3. Budapest - General information • 1.8 million inhabitants (2.5 million incl. agglomeration) • Area: 525 km2 • 23 districts • GDP 34% • The Danube divides the city into two parts.

  4. BKV • The history looks backward into 100 years • Owned 100 % by the Municipality of Budapest • Single integrated, multi-modal operator in Budapest • Organising, planning, investment activities in the Capital and beyond

  5. BKV – Main data • 1.3 billion passenger • 5.4 billion passenger km • 12,600 full-time employees • 2,600 km total length of routes • 4,800 stops and stations • More than 3000 vehicles

  11. BKV – Transport developments • 150 pieces new Volvo buses from 2004 continually • Low-floor vehicles • EURO 3 engine • Future plans: - start procurement of 1000 vehicles - realistically 300 pieces by 2010

  14. BKV – Transport developments • Continue the procurement of new trolley buses • 6 low floor buses were purchased in 2005 (Ganz Solaris) • 39 more vehicles by 2008 • The full trolley bus fleet will be of low floor vehicles with these 45 buses

  15. BKV – Transport developments Development of metro lines • Millenium Underground Railway - 1996: reconstruction • Metro Line 2 (East-West underground) - 2003-2008: reconstruction - different sidewalk pavement for people with visual impairment

  26. Future prospects • BKV would like to preserve its determinant role in Budapest urban transport • BKV would like to improve the level of its services • BKV would like to be an integrated, regional transport operator
