Silicon Detector Center • Team of talented, experienced engineers, designers and technicians • Extensive experience with: • Micron precision assembly • Engineering of low-mass, stiff structures • Thermal management issues • Extensive equipment and resources • >7000 ft2 of high-quality clean room space • 6000 ft2 operated as class 10000 • 1000 ft2 operated as class 5000 • 17 CMMs of various accuracies and measurement ranges • 1 automated optical measurement system (OGP) • 2600 ft2 of burn-in space • 6 Kulicke & Soffa wire bonding machines Fermilab Long Range Planning Committee Open Forum On Detector R&D - Oct. 30, 2003

SiDet Projects • CMS TOB Detector • 5,928 modules for the CMS Tracker Outer Barrel • 8M wire bonds • Single-sided detectors, 500m thick, 122/183m pitch • Modules assembled on 688 rods • Modules build using Aerotech Robot Gantry system • Half of work done here, half at UCSB • CMS Forward Pixel Detector • 4 disks; each half disk has 12 Aluminum blades • 12 Mpixels, pixel size 100x150 mm • Plaquette with VHDI, HDI, sensors and readout chips wrapped around blade Fermilab Long Range Planning Committee Open Forum On Detector R&D - Oct. 30, 2003

SiDet Projects • Run IIb silicon detectors for CDF and D0 • Each detector ~8m2 of silicon CANCELED • Cancellation of Run IIb silicon detectors leaves us with • excess capacity at SiDet • Could take on additional CMS work • Could expand into other areas: • Diamond detectors for beam monitoring • CCD cameras for astronomy/astrophysics … Fermilab Long Range Planning Committee Open Forum On Detector R&D - Oct. 30, 2003

Vacuum Deposition and Thin Film Coatings • Facility in Lab 7 Run by Eileen Hahn • High demand from outside Fermilab • Vacuum deposited thin films of precise thickness from • sputtering or evaporation. • Film thickness as small as 10 Å with tolerances of 1 Å • Applications: • Mirror fiber ends • Cerenkov mirrors • CsI photocathodes • Ti & Ni coated microwave absorbers • Gold coated foils … Fermilab Long Range Planning Committee Open Forum On Detector R&D - Oct. 30, 2003

CNC Routing Facility • Facility in Lab 8 run by Phyllis Deering for precision cutting, drilling • and milling of plastic, wood, G-10, carbon fiber, etc. Parts vary • from fractions of an inch to 17’ long. • Two 12’ x 5’ Thermwood routing machines • High-speed 16’ x 5’ Gerber routing machine • Dual table 17’ x 5’ Axxiom routing machine • Recent large jobs include: • Optical fiber manifolds for MINOS • CMS muon honeycomb panels, copper cooling plates • GLAST scintillator tile production and assembly Fermilab Long Range Planning Committee Open Forum On Detector R&D - Oct. 30, 2003

Lab 3 • Carbon fiber facility and high-quality lab space run by John Krider • 2700 ft2 of clean room space that can be operated at class 1000 • CMM with large active volume (1.5 x 1.5 x 4 m3) • Ongoing work on BTeV straws, CKM straws in vacuum, beam instrumentation • Carbon Fiber Facility (Dave Butler): • Autoclave oven with 12 x 18 x 48 in3 active area • 6 x 6 x 12 ft3 walk in oven for large carbon fiber structures • Recent work includes carbon fiber cylinders for D0 fiber tracker, numerous supports and widgets for silicon detectors including stave support, bulkheads and support cylinders for Run IIb detectors.   13. PMT Test Facility • Facility designed to study the response of PMTs for light levels of a few • pe’s to millions of pe’s. Mantained by Hogan Nguyen. • It consists of a liquid dye contained in a quartz vessel, pumped into • flourescence by a nitrogen laser.   The flourescence  light is  viewed by 2 • Pin Photodiodes and a quartz optical fiber carrying light to a dark box • containing a PMT.   The laser light intensity arriving at the dye can be • adjusted by a variable filter wheel. • The 2 Pin diodes are digitized by a 20-bit • Burr-Brown ADC  (0.5 fc/count sensitivity).   • The linearity of the Pin Diode Burr-Brown • ADC combination is better than 0.5%  over • the entire dynamic range.   Fermilab Long Range Planning Committee Open Forum On Detector R&D - Oct. 30, 2003
