Federated Identity System for Scientific Collaborations: Challenges and Solutions

The Federated Identity Management initiative, introduced by Bob Jones in February 2012, emerged from identity management concerns raised by IT leaders from EIROforum labs. These laboratories, along with various national and regional research organizations, face common challenges in collaboration and identity management. Two prior workshops highlighted user community needs and developed a common vision for federated solutions. This ongoing effort seeks global interoperability among services, with input from international colleagues, ensuring effective identity management for scientific collaboration.

How did this start? • Issue of identity management raised by IT leaders from EIROforum labs during their IT working group meeting hosted by ESA in January 2012 EIROforum = CERN, EFDA, EMBL, ESA, ESO, ESRF, European XFEL, ILL • These laboratories, as well as national and regional research organizations, are facing similar challenges Federated Identity Management Workshop - Bob Jones

  3. Workshops • Two Federated Identity Management for Scientific Collaborations workshops already held: • June 2011, CERN • Identified needs of users communities • Current state of usage explored • Scope for commonality and willingness to work together expressed Federated Identity Management Workshop - Bob Jones

  4. Workshops (II) • November 2011, RAL • Uses cases presented • Common vision developed • Architects/contacts from each community agreed to produce a common paper • Policy makers and national funding agencies as well as technology and services providers present at both workshops Federated Identity Management Workshop - Bob Jones

  5. This workshop • First face to face discussion of the contents of the draft paper • Communities have stated they have users around the world and so any solutions must interoperate globally • Today is an opportunity to gather input from colleagues in Asia Pacific • Will also get updates about on-going service/technology developments and pilot projects Federated Identity Management Workshop - Bob Jones
