The Olmec Civilization, dating back to 1200 B.C.E. in southern Mexico near the Gulf Coast, is recognized as Mesoamerica's "mother culture." Flourishing in a hot and humid environment rich in natural resources like salt, clay, and rubber, the Olmecs thrived on fertile flood plains ideal for agriculture. Their most significant site, San Lorenzo, featured grand mounds, pyramids, and monumental stone sculptures. They practiced animism, worshipped jaguar deities, and engaged in extensive trade networks across Mesoamerica. The civilization eventually collapsed, leaving a lasting impact on later cultures like the Maya.
