Diploma Tracks College/University Prep • Students planning to attend 4-year public universities right after high school College/Tech Prep • Students planning to attend community college right after high school and possible transfer to a 4-year college or students planning to attend most private colleges after high school Career Prep • Students planning to attend community college or go straight to work after high school
Testing RequirementsClass of 2010 • All students must score a level III or IV on the following State End-of-Course Tests: • English I (9th) • Algebra I (9th or 10th) • Civics & Economics (10th) • Biology (10th) • US History (11th)
College Applications • Start in September of senior Year • General guidelines for application deadlines (check with the individual institution for exact dates & deadlines): • October – early decision/priority deadline • January – regular admission deadline • March – final admission deadline
What is included in a college application? • The application form itself (paper or online) • Background and residency information • Honors, awards, extracurricular activities • Essay and/or personal statement • Entrance exam scores • Transcript • Letters of recommendation • Application fee (check or money order – DO NOT send cash)
College Entrance Exams (SAT and ACT) • Usually not necessary for Community Colleges • Start taking in spring of junior year if planning to attend a four-year college/university immediately following high school • Preparation opportunities • SAT Prep class • PSAT (10th & 11th grade) • Online Resources • Study books • Make sure to send your scores to all schools where you are interested in applying (Can send four free) • This includes the NCAA Clearinghouse and some scholarships like Teaching Fellows
SAT Scores accepted at all institutions in NC Components: Reading, Math, Writing Math includes Geometry and Algebra II concepts Cost = $45 ACT Scores accepted at all institutions in NC Components: Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, optional Writing Math does not include Geometry and Algebra II concepts Cost with writing = $46, without writing = $31 SAT vs. ACT
Transcripts • Lists all the courses taken and grades received in high school. It also includes test scores and attendance history. • Transcript request forms are located in the Guidance office • Send transcript with paper application • Allow a week to receive • Online applications • Use CFNC Website (http://www.cfnc.org). • Request transcript to be sent to the school. • Use NCWise ID (Listed on student’s report card)
Letters of Recommendation • Someone, not related, who knows your academic ability and/or character • Think of teachers, counselors, coaches, your boss, minister, etc. • Give the person specific information about you and your activities/accomplishments or a resume • Don’t wait until the last minute!!
Financial Aid/Scholarships • Types • Federal Aid (grants and/or loans) • Scholarships • Merit based • Need based • Where to find them • Federal Aid • Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) any time after January 1st • Money is awarded based on the “expected family contribution” determined by tax information from the previous year • We will have a Financial Aid parent presentation at BHS in early January • Scholarships • Monthly list of scholarship opportunities is published by guidance • Check with prospective colleges/universities or local organizations
Important Dates • Sept.14 – Make Up for Senior pictures • Sept.17 – College Day money/permission slips due • Sept. 24 – College Day field trip • Sept.30 – Jostens presentation for 12th grade students during Activity Period • Oct. 7 – Grad products orders taken during lunches ($60 deposit due at time of order) • Dec. 1 – Senior Fee Due ($30) • January 2011 – Financial Aid night presentation • February 19 – FAFSA Day • June 11 – Graduation
