Analysis of current situation • Associate degree – 2 years of education • Two-year post secondary education is not considered part of higher education in Bulgaria • Fourth level of professional qualification • Education in professional colleges • Registration with the Ministry of Education and Science

Proposed changes in the structure of higher education degrees in Bulgaria Year One – 60 ECTS Summer internship I 15 ECTS Associate degree 135 ECTS Year Two – 60 ECTS Summer internship II – 15 ECTS + Bachelor degree 210 ECTS Year Three – 60 ECTS Three semester (2 taught semesters + 1 dissertation semester – 90 ECTS Master degree 300 ECTS +

Goals of the Associate degree in Tourism and Hospitality • Develop professional skills necessary for working on operational and supervisory level in the tourism industry • Shorten the period students are away from the business • Better matching between workers’ qualifications and industry requirements (overqualified personnel on some positions and underqualified on others)

  6. Exemplary curriculum of an Associate degree programme • Year One – general knowledge in business and economics (without research subjects) and introductory tourism and hospitality courses: Economics, Business environment, Management, Business communications, Marketing, Organizational behaviour, Human resource management, Information technologies, Accounting and Finance, Introduction to tourism, Introductory practice (in a hotel and a restaurant)

  7. Exemplary curriculum of an Associate degree programme • Summer internship – min 10 weeks • Year Two – special tourism industry subjects: Front office operations, Hotel software, Hotel management, F&B operations, F&B management, Events, Animation, Tour operations, Guide services
