  2. Coronary Heart Disease • (CHD) is the narrowing and blockage of the coronary arteries that supply the heart with blood and oxygen • caused by the buildup of plaque in arteries • “Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women.” PubMed

  3. Brief History • 1970 – Doctors used a balloon angioplasty to help patients with narrowing coronary arteries • 1986 – First implant of a coronary stent to a human by French scientists • 1994 – FDA approval of the first coronary stent

  4. Coronary Stents • The stents are typically small, expandable metal mesh tubes that support the blood vessel when it’s being restricted by the build up of plaque. • Two types of coronary stents: Bare-metal stents and Drug-coated stents • Drug-coated stents slowly release medication when restenosis occurs • After the procedure, the artery will heal around the stent.

  5. Procedure • A small incision will be made in your leg • The catheter is inserted and pushed up to the blood vessel • An x-ray machine will be monitored at your heart so the surgeon can position the catheter properly • The catheter will be expanded to widen he artery wall • Another catheter with a stent attached to it will be sent to the artery where it will expand and the stent will deploy. Balloon inflates for about 60 seconds to expand

  6. Future • Fully absorbable stents (FAS) • decrease long-term stent thrombosis • FAS actually needed? • Failure rate is already 1% • Stents are not a cure
