  1. Different interpersonal relationships

  2. differences between western friendship and Chinese friendship

  3. 1.The friendship and friends in the eyes of Chinese and American Friendship and friends in the eyes of Chinese, although Chinese are more gentle humility, in their heart for the definition of friend and friendship is quite clear. It is very serious for friends and friendship. Chinese people own the friendship with like-minded friends who share the similar interests, similar personalities, otherwise they can not be real friends and they can only be regarded as ordinary.

  4. Friendship and friend in the eyes of Americansis quite different from the Chinese people. In the American dictionary, the definition of friends is very widely. In the OXFORD friend are: 1.person you like 2. supporter 3. not enemy . The people to meet by chance like patches of drifting duckweed can be friends.

  5. 3.How long can friendship last? In Chinese culture: Chinese seem to expect their friendships to stay the same over a long period of time maybe for a lifetime. A true friendship is a relationship that endures through changes in the lives of the friends.

  6. In American culture: In the United States a person is likely to change even "best friends" several times over the years. Even this relationship in which people feel close emotionally and tell each other their secrets and personal problems may not survive life changes such as move to another city, graduation from a University, a significant change in economic circumstances, or the marriage of one of the friends. The reason is that friendship, like so many other relationships in the United States including marriage, depends on frequent interaction with the other person. If the people involved do not see each other and interact regularly, the relationship is likely to wither and die.

  7. 5.Differences in communications In Chinese culture: Chinese people often communicate indirectly while westerners tend to be more direct. In close personal relationships as friendship, the opposite is often the case. Talk between Chinese friends would probably sound too direct to western ears. As we have seen Chinese codes of etiquette require more formal and polite interactions with strangers or guests than is typical in the west, but in china relationships with friends are much more informal than similar western relationships.

  8. In American culture:Americans apologize to their friends for minor inconveniences such as telephoning late at night or asking for dome specific help. Even in close friendships Americans use polite forms such as "could you…" And "would you mind…" Because Chinese do not use these polite forms in their close relationships, they probably do not use them when speaking English with westerners they know well.

  9. Teacher and students

  10. 1、Introduction • Education is a very important part of a country. And teacher-student relationship is a basic and vital interpersonal relationship. To make teaching more efficient, educator should research and study deeply and dealing with the relationships in classes correctly.

  11. 2、Differences between Chinese and American • (1)Chinese students respect their teachers and value teachers’ principles, which promotes the relationship between them. American students usually make friends with their teachers and they feel relaxed in classes.

  12. Chinese students acquire knowledge from their teachers without much effort, and they will turn to their teachers when they have problems. However, American students are used to solving problems on their own and exchanging their findings with their teachers. As a result, Chinese students respect their teachers more than American, and American have more friendship with teacher

  13. (2) A teacher is just an ordinary job in America, in contrast with the holy job in China. Teachers are considered as servants in America, and they make their livings by teaching, which is quite different from China. • This difference in views results in the ways students regard their teachers.Teachersin America encourage their students to do better when students make mistakes. By contrast, Chinese teachers usually blame and discourage their students.

  14. (3)On the difference of teaching methods, Chinese is teacher oriented, however American is student oriented. That is to say, the students are passive in China, and active in America. In Chinese model, teachers are far from the students, so the image of teachers is respected. • In American model, teachers are very close to students, so they are same to the students. Thus it is very hard to develop relationship with teachers in China. But it is very common to make friends with teachers in America. In a conclusion, American teaching method is better.

  15. 3、conclusion • In a conclusion, Chinese teacher-student relationship is a respected relationship, and American teacher-student relationship is a friendship. The autistics culture, communication habits, teaching methods, and students’ characters lead American and Chinese teacher-student relationship to the different directions.

  16. Boss and employee

  17. "The Chinese staff in foreign office although has the decent working environment, but the cultural conflict still make the boss, colleagues, and even themselves inefficient." The manager of Global talent development center said.

  18. Western management is with "thing" for the center, foreign boss will encourage employees to speak, innovation, seek is a challenge, speak one's mind freely, and put forward the old, the original operation methods and suggestions actively. Or even quarrel with the boss, dispute is allowed , encouraged .In Western management philosophy, value is the outcome, "give me the result" is the first. So the process is bold, open.

  19. Chinese boss is generally difficult to accept his job was under question, and the employees will not do so. They will not ask any question, never challenge the authority of his boss. Some Chinese employees in the face of their foreign boss, often encounter from the two aspects of confusion: on the one hand is the boss speaks too directly.; on the other hand is he struggled to consider. In China, when the boss tells something, often overtones in conversation, employees must be to gather his implication. It originates the different ways of expression between Chinese and Western countries. Westerners speak clear, open ; Chinese words are fuzzy.

  20. Family relation

  21. Preface: • In today’s globalized world, it has become very simple to meet people from all kinds of cultural backgrounds – and, sometimes, fall in love. • Of course, international marriage is not always as easy as it seems. Although love is proverbially blind, initially disregarding any cultural differences which may cause issues, those who are in an international marriage know that these kinds of relationships are particularly challenging. • Language barriers, religious and political differences can cause severe conflicts for couples in an international marriage. But even seemingly trivial points of discussion, such as how to celebrate certain holidays or one’s eating habits, may result in arguments.

  22. Growing number of global marriages • Asia is the part of the world where cross-border marriages have been rising most consistently. According to Gavin Jones of the National University of Singapore, 5% of marriages in Japan in 2008-09 included a foreign spouse (with four times as many foreign wives as husbands). Before 1980, the share had been below 1%. In South Korea, over 10% of marriages included a foreigner in 2010, up from 3.5% in 2000. In both countries, the share of cross-border marriages seems to have stabilised lately, perhaps as a result of the global economic slowdown.

  23. International marriages are common in much of Europe, too. in France the proportion of international marriage rose from about 10% in 1996 to 16% in 2009. In Germany, the rise is a little lower, from 11.3% in 1990 to 13.7% in 2010. Some smaller countries have much higher levels. Nearly half the marriages in Switzerland are international ones, up from a third in 1990. Around one in five marriages in Sweden, Belgium and Austria involves a foreign partner.

  24. Problems • In the first place, couples coming from different countries always have different cultural backgrounds, which will lead to misunderstanding and conflicts. As we all know, each nation has its own attitude towards life, such as different financial arrangements, children’s education and so on. For example, we Chinese people like to save money to buy what we want, but people in western countries prefer to spend money in advance. If a cross-culture family consists of a Chinese and an American, conflicts are likely to arise between the couple. On the other hand, different nations have different ways of educating children. Some like to tell their kids what can do and what cannot do. However, some like to let their kids know the world by themselves. If the husband and wife often quarrel over this issue, their kids can not grow healthily.

  25. What’s more, a cross-culture marriage always has to face the public concern. In fact, a lot of people can’t accept it, especially the old citizen. They think people from another country are unknown to them and the characteristic is the big problem. They are reluctant to let their children take the risk. In some cases, when we see those couples with different complexions, we may feel a bit of strange. Actually speaking, some people still have the prejudice on foreigners. Under these circumstances, the couples in a cross-culture marriage have to endure some gossip, and their children also have to endure some pressure. If couples can’t deal with these problems, they may break up in the end.

  26. Last but not the least, there is also misunderstanding of the family relationship in a cross-culture marriage. In China, most elder people want to live with their children. On one hand, they can help to take care of the family. On the other hand, they can enjoy the happiness with their descendants. If a foreign boy gets married with a Chinese girl, he may feel very confused about his parents-in-law’s action. At the same time, the girl also feels uneasy, because the boy’s parents probably don’t give any economic support to them. Furthermore, as we all know, many nations are very open, while some are very reserved. If one side from the nation which is close to other persons frequently, another side from a reserved nation will have the sense of insecurity. They possibly can’t stand other side.

  27. From what has been discussed above, we can naturally draw the conclusion that there are definitely some difficulties in a cross-culture marriage. Different cultural backgrounds, the public concern and misunderstanding of the family relationship are all inevitable difficulties. So we must take serious consideration and ask ourselves if we have been prepared to be in a cross-culture marriage when we have the chance to marry to foreigners.

  28. Thank you!
