  1. Ways to compare 1984

  2. How is it the same? • Totalitarian society? • Strict surveillance? • Repression of natural human desires? • Only a small percentage benefits? • Desire for power is ever-increasing and becomes more invasive to the individual as time goes on

  3. How is it different? • Is it a corporation or a government entity wielding power? • Is technology used in some way other than portrayed in 1984? • Is there any way to escape?

  4. Is it an extension? • Is your movie/text an extension of 1984? • Are the main characters similar? • How do the characters in the movie approach their dilemma as compared to Winston and Julia?

  5. The problem with 1984 • “Big Brother” wins and completely destroys Julia and Winston. O’Brien takes great pleasure in their destruction. The stage is set from the beginning to bring about Winston’s failure. • Winston is completely unprepared to “win” against Big Brother. • This is hard to watch. We want a hero to save us from this type of pervasive, evil system. • Does your movie offer a hero that can beat the totalitarian system and usher in a new world of freedom and peace?
