  2. Why Did They Need Heroes? • People needed an example with the changing morals in 1920s • Began to admire people with old values • People became heroes from their courage and humility

  4. Why a Hero? • He was humble and didn’t accept millions of dollars in gifts • People celebrated his humility and his solid morals

Amelia Mary Earhart Born: July 24 1897 Died: July 1937(Date unknown) Lindbergh’s feat inspired later flyers, including Amelia. 1928- Earhart became first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean (was only a passenger though) 1932- made a trip alone becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. 1935- she was the first person to fly solo from Los Angeles to Mexico City by official invitation from the Mexican Governmnt.

Later she set another record by being the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California a challenge that had resulted in the death of many aviators before her. 1936- Starts to plan her round – the – world flight 1937- Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan tried to fly around the world! After completing two thirds of the trip, they disappeared mysteriously while crossing the Pacific Ocean. 1963- The United States issued the Amelia Earhart 8 cent airmail stamp

Sports Heroes • Jack Dempsey won the heavyweight title fight against George Carentier. • Jim Thorpe Started his professional football career. • Thorpe earlier had won a in the Olympics for decathlon and pentathlon and played major league baseball • Thorpe later became the President of the NFL • Babe Ruth during his years with the Yankees and Red Sox hit 714 home runs. This record was not broken for 40 years. • He also hit 60 home runs in a 154 game season. • Olympic Tennis players Hazel Wightman and Helen wills • Gertrude Ederle won an Olympic gold for swimming and swan the English Channel. She beat the mans time by 2 hrs.
