  2. Read the scenario on p. 18 of your text. Write down what you would take with you and think about why you chose those items. • (worksheet)

  3. What is culture? • The way of life and values of a group of people • Includes tangible (touchable) and intangible (non-touchable) elements.

  4. Culture traits – the smallest elements of a culture (ex. song, saying, food, etc.) 3 categories: 1. Artifacts – objects made by humans (ex. cell phones, cars, jewelry, etc.)

  5. Example of artifact:

  6. 2. Sociofacts– the way we act around other people and rules that govern our behaviour. (ex. How we act in school, rules of a game, hand gestures, etc.) The OK sign, the index finger and thumb forming a circle, is an obscene gesture in Brazil, impolite in Greece and in many areas of Russia. In Japan it means money and in France, zero or valueless.

  7. Mentifacts – the beliefs, ideas, values, and knowledge that influence us. (ex. family values, traditional beliefs, and ideas about right and wrong behaviour. Belief in the importance of beingphysically fit

  8. Culture complex – the interaction of two or more culture traits. Cultural landscape – the imprint of human activity on the natural landscape. Examples include fish plant, roads, school, houses, monuments, lighthouses, etc.

  9. DESCRIBING CULTURE

  10. Culture region – an area where one or more identifiable culture traits exists. Culture regions can range from very small to very large. 3 categories:

  11. 1. Local culture – expressions of culture that are not widely practiced. (ex. - a tradition that is usually only practised in Newfoundland)

  12. Regional culture – expressions of culture that are practiced over a broad geographic area. (ex. a Canadian tradition)

  13. Popular culture – when a culture complex is widely accepted and practiced by people around the world. (Ex. commercial products that are conveyed through mass media)

  14. QUESTIONS: 1. What aspects of local, regional and popular culture do you practice (or are you aware of in your community)? Give 3 examples of each. 2. Which culture region (local, regional, or popular) has the most influence in your life? Why do you think this is so?

  15. Culture can also be organized by a time period:

  16. Traditional culture – culture traits that have been passed down to us from our ancestors. Ex. - the celebration of certain holidays.

  17. Contemporary culture – culture traits that originate in modern times. Ex. - use of digital cameras and indoor wall climbing.

  18. Whatshapes culture? Economics, geography, history, and politics

  19. 1. Economics – the science that deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services

  20. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) – the value of all goods produced by a region.

  21. Geography – the study of the earth (land use, climate, elevation, soil, vegetation, population, industries, provinces)

  22. History – the branch of knowledge dealing with past events

  23. Politics – the process by which groups/governments make decisions
